At an American Legion post in Anchorage.
Today tRump had a rally here with Palin and spoke around 4pm. My bar was desolate for about three hours
till around 7.
And then the tRumpers arrived. Holy fuck. What a SHITSHOW. All dressed in red white and blue. Cannot believe how many veterans eat this shit up.
They partied. I took their money and when they tried to get me into a conversation about the rally. I told them he wasnt a person I liked or admired. And asked if they wanted to play pull tabs or needed another drink. Well. That pretty much shut them up and we all got along.
It is still mostly an unwritten rule to not talk politics in a bar. Mostly.
Now I know who more of the tRumpers are and will act accordingly.

(1,109 posts)Does "pull tabs" mean you would not serve them another round as they may have had too much to drink?
AKwannabe
(5,641 posts)AKs only form of gambling (or so some think).
Here they call em rippies. WA state has em too. Pull Tabs.
Id say its a lot like a slot machine. Open the paper up and see if there is a prize. Can buy in different denominations. Was that tmi???
wyn borkins
(1,109 posts)Guess I don't understand how 'open the paper' works as I never found any prizes inside the newspapers I purchased in my very dim and distant past.
AKwannabe
(5,641 posts)Basically. Its gambling. AK only allows non-profits to buy or run the games. Some places here sign up non profits to be able to have a business as they get some of the action so to speak. Works WAY differently in WA state tho. Probably so in every state that allows them.

your sunset these days?
AKwannabe
(5,641 posts)The TV reports a time. But, really. It doesnt get dark. I guess I see the sun going down around 11:30 but may be a little later. Now that we are past solstice we are marching toward the other end of the spectrum. Round 6 hours of light per day.
I just moved here in May. Havent seen a deep night sky yet.
electric_blue68
(14,854 posts)That's wild not having seen a "normal" for most people deep night sky yet because of when you moved.
A IRL friend visited Alaska in ? early May several years back. So got the sun setting around 10:30p - 11p ish. She said it was wild
I also have a long time on line friend in Finland who's far enough up (1/3rd) to get the midnight sun AND the deepest dark later in wintertime; bc Helsinki, Finland is too far south for it.
What got me originally decades ago was a cousin here in the US at the time who was sent to ?Sweden for then more advanced (and successful) treatment for the cancer he had.
At that point my uncle told my parents the Sun was rising at 10AM, and setting at 2PM! I was like "Whaaaa?!!!". We were both ?either tweens, or young teens.
Totally blew my mind, esp disking the darkness of even a NYC winter.

They know I am a Democrat because party registration is public here. We never discuss politics. A few with Trump shrines in their yards but most are fine as neighbors. It just sickening to know that these people are actively voting to destroy our democracy. Most of them don't have a clue where this is heading.

The last time I volunteered to give out Poppies for my legion post, I sat with a woman who started going off on 'libtards'. I kindly told her that I was a libtard. She apologized to me but slowly began to justify her views the whole time we were there. I can't stand the Legion anymore nor the stupid members that continue to support Trump. I pay for 3 memberships every year and certainly don't need to continue to support their crap. Trump lied, cheated and tried to steal my vote. As a veteran, I think this is about as low as you can get. These Legion members are not Patriots. They are idiots and I am embarrassed by them.

(1,202 posts)I dumped my Legion membership a few years ago because of their Trump support and how they are blatantly racist and bigoted. Oh how they hate Democrats!

I honestly don't understand why Orange Asshole has so many veterans eating out of his hand. I think our military may have done us a disservice -- taught us to despise the humble, and look up to the braggart.

(501 posts)The service taught me how important diversity is. Serving next to all races was by far, my greatest experience I took home with me. It made me realize our existence has been successful due to the collective effort of a world of human beings, not just those in my backyard.

(14,489 posts)Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Flag_Code
Summary of the advisory code
The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing, unless it is the ensign responding to a salute from a ship of a foreign nation. This is sometimes misreported as a tradition that comes from the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, where countries were asked to dip their flag to King Edward VII; American team flag bearer Ralph Rose did not follow this protocol, and teammate Martin Sheridan is often, though apocryphally, quoted as proclaiming that "this flag dips before no earthly king."
When a flag is so tattered that it no longer fits to serve as a symbol of the United States, it should be replaced in a dignified manner, preferably by burning. The Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of the USA, TrailLife USA, the U.S. Military and other organizations regularly conduct dignified flag retirement ceremonies.
The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.[8]
The flag should never touch anything physically beneath it.
The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds but always allowed to fall free.
The flag should always be permitted to fall freely. (An exception was made during the Apollo moon landings when the flag hung from a vertical pole designed with an extensible horizontal bar, allowing full display even in the absence of an atmosphere.)
The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally.
The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever.
The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.
The flag should never be upside down, except to signal distress or great danger.
When displayed vertically against a wall, the union should be to the observers left.

(50,336 posts)If any one of those folks were forced to spend an afternoon, alone, one-on-one with Donald tRump, then maybe, MAYBE that would be enough time for them to realize that as individuals, Diarrhea Donny despises each and every one of them with every fiber of his being, and views them as "losers" and "suckers" and has no interest in them or their personal lives and wants nothing to do with them. He HATES them.
Contrast that with Joe Biden. I bet Joe would make an honest effort to connect with these Americans at a personal, human level, listen to what they had to say, and treat them with dignity and respect.
