(CNN)Steve Bannon -- who defied a congressional subpoena and is set to go to trial on criminal contempt charges -- told the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, insurrection on Saturday that he is now willing to testify, ideally at a public hearing, according to a letter obtained by CNN.
Bannon's reversal comes after he received a letter from former President Donald Trump waiving executive privilege, although both the House select committee and federal prosecutors contend that privilege claim never gave Bannon carte blanche to ignore a congressional subpoena in the first place.
"When you first received the Subpoena to testify and provide documents, I invoked Executive Privilege. However, I watched how unfairly you and others have been treated, having to spend vast amounts of money on legal fees, and all of the trauma you must be going through for the love of your Country, and out of respect for the Office of the President," Trump wrote in a Saturday letter to Bannon, which was also obtained by CNN.

(8,079 posts)There are people who thrive and get off on being low life jerks. They insult, push buttons, challenge normal forms of civility, etc. just for the thrill.
Of course, these same people will turn around and make some personal gesture that's monumentally over the top in generosity--as you might tell, I've run into these sorts in life but I digress.

(1,735 posts)The idea of getting a thrill out of causing misery and mayhem is too weird to contemplate. If they careen from one extreme to the other, they must be feeling desperate to find a sense of balance.

(12,442 posts)He really needs to do it first in close setting.... show video clips and maybe let him sit with TV audience...open hearing.
I smell the con job if he is " in control"...so to speak.
***** A clue for me to this double switch scam I see Bannon doing publicly is that tRump came out and said, " I wave executive privilege" when he DOES NOT EVEN HAVE EXECUTIVE PRIVLIDE TO DISPENSE IN THIS MATTER!

(32,093 posts)Don't believe for a minute that this sleazy motherfucker is going to do anything other than lie, obfuscate, and stir up hate and violence. That being said, I wouldn't put it past him to throw Trump and his associates under the bus, either. I'm not counting on that, but nothing this slimeball does will surprise me.

(22,920 posts)he and Trump are coordinating this. Same thing with that Stewart Rhodes, head of Oathkeepers, suddenly wanting to testify at the hearing, live.
It will be another "stand back, stand by" messaging moment.

(11,878 posts)Why would the prosecutors on this committee, who have been so smart, allow TFG to roll a hand grenade into the middle of these hearings?

(115,852 posts)by pretending to cooperate with the J6 committee. If he were to testify he'd just be using the proceeding as a platform for more of his and TFG's bullshit; otherwise he wouldn't ask for a public hearing. If they want to hear from him they'll insist on a closed-session deposition.

(5,851 posts)There IS no executive privilege! It lies with the president, Joe Biden, and he waived it.
Besides, Bannon was never part of the cabinet so there WAS NO EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE.
But the goddamn media can't report the actual fucking facts here.
The committee should tell Bannon its too late and sock his butt in jail. Who does Bannon think he is anyway.

(38,016 posts)In the words of Charles Pierce, these two just want to "Oliver North" the hearings. Hopefully the Committee won't let that happen... again (I'm looking at you, Cheney child)

(3,316 posts)First, he couldn't have exec privilege anyway-- he hasn't been an employee for 5 years, and not through this time at all.
And he's going to get in there and not just lie, but go off on insane crazy conspiracy theory rants-- that he doesn't believe in, as he's a complete machiavellian cynic. He just wants to destroy people's sanity and institutions. So he'll get up there and lie in what he thinks is a real clever way-- lie after lie, nothing making sense, driving rational people crazy-- just to bollocks up the works.
Let's hope Raskin (who understands this kind of guy) and Cheney (who probably knows him personally) persuade the others to forget 'even-handed' and 'fair' and say, testify under oath and on video, and then we'll discuss live broadcast (and never do it-- he's too dangerous).

(11,445 posts)have talked this through. i don't think he should get a public hearing, give him no air time unless it is edited tape. Nothing live, don't give him a chance to address followers. That's what they want, free air time.

(111,110 posts)He thought he could just wait until the last minute and change his mind and testify. He would just say the former guy said it was ok if he testified and then, everything would be alright. All the charges would be dropped because he has agreed with the subpoena. Smart, huh?
