(14,864 posts)It never got to 116 degrees in Conroe Texas today. The heat index may be 116, but the thermometer wouldn't read that.

It's recommended to pull veggies in June, but many people keep them in. Only Okra is recommended in summer

(23,138 posts)Here in Virginia it's actually been pleasant this summer. Every time the weather gets up into the 90s a thunderstorm comes through the the high go back to 70s and 80s.

(87,209 posts)That the heat/thunderstorm situation is doing just that over here in Montana this year too. Last year, on 7/5 it jumped up to the high 90s and stayed there for almost two months with no relief, got into triple digits several times. In Montana, most of which is north of the 45th parallel!

(134 posts)Texted to say it was 117.
It makes me so sad.
We went to Estes Park (CO) last night where we almost always need a light jacket in the summer for the cooler evenings. Yesterday was the first time we didn't need it.
Edited for spelling

(10,595 posts)When I look at the hobbies weather stations I see a lot of variance. Thats what the above photo is by the way - its not an official weather station - its a hobby station and comparing it to professional stations is disingenuous at best.
You can see for yourself here (at 7pm most of these are higher than the official high still):

(25,995 posts)The NWS Stations are cited so they don't have reflective heat.
Many home stations are subject to numerous factors, including reflective heat.
My front yard had 120 degrees once in the winter because I put the thermometer too close to the brick in my entry way.

(14,864 posts)Because every source I've looked at says the high temperature in Houston today was about 102.

(6,666 posts)From 2 in the afternoon to about 830 at night, my air can't keep up. My SIL is an HVAC, and it's not my AC. It's just too damned hot. Here I am, in an air conditioned house, and it is the hottest I've experienced it all this very early summer. No telling what August is going to bring.
Mariana
(14,864 posts)So, if it's 105 outside, it will be 80-85 degrees inside.
Lurker Deluxe
(1,041 posts)The "split" across a HVAC evaporator coil is around 20 degrees when/if the system is functioning correctly. The rest is up to insulation and proper air flow.
There is no functional difference between your HVAC system and your freezer.
I am in Houston and it is 104/5 outside and I am sitting at 77 inside and my system is cycling as it should. I could drop it to 72 and it would do it ... expensively.
The reduction in temperature is not an absolute due to the HVAC "split".

(25,995 posts)The thermometer sensor never receives direct sunlight.
The thermometer receives plenty of ventilation and is not blocked from the wind.
If the thermometer is placed on a roof-top, make sure it is at least 5 feet above the roof-top.
If the thermometer is placed above grass, again, it should be at least 5 feet above the grass surface.
The thermometer is at least 50 feet from the nearest paved surface.

For what it's worth, when it was 111 degrees here in 2011, I had my little thermometer with me. I got huge variations in temperature just by moving the thing up and down by a few feet. It was really weird. Maybe the anomalous temps that day was causing lots goofy air mixing, but I saw the thermometer vary widely. My fence was really hot. I thought under the trampoline would be cool, but it wasn't. It was just really weird.
