Why you should use "weed" or "cannabis" & NOT "Marijuana".

Are you aware of the racist history of the word "Marijuana"?
Don't worry, many aren't. But it's there & something you may want to be aware of.
The word "Marijuana" is "rooted in xenophobia and misinformation".

Below is a very valuable article because it's educational rooted in historic fact, not from some pundit writing an opinion piece.
I'm clipping certain sections which illustrate the racist connotations of the word "Marijuana" and how it came about.
Please take the time to read the article because it's helluva informative & you'll come away better educated with a lot of knowledge. Good stuff!

MARIJUANA IS MORE THAN JUST A WORD, ITS CONTROVERSIAL HISTORY REVEALS
https://www.thenewshouse.com/highstakes/marijuana-is-more-than-a-word/

SNIPS---

"Today, it has become a buzzword for politics and law enforcement. The United States’ history of federally policing the widely accepted, yet taboo, word is rooted in xenophobia and misinformation."

"From 1910 to 1920, the United States saw tens of thousands of Mexicans immigrating to the southwest in the wake of the Mexican Civil War. The influx of immigration escalated anti-Mexican immigrant sentiment and a campaign of “reefer madness” among white Americans, most commonly by America’s resident xenophobe and the commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, Harry Anslinger. Anslinger’s propaganda campaigns created racist narratives, like those who smoke marijuana are of an “inferior race” and are more likely to engage in sexual promiscuity and violence. By adopting the Spanish word “marijuana,” rather than the already widely-used “cannabis,” Anslinger and other prohibition activists of the early to mid-19th century were intentionally connecting the use of marijuana by brown and black bodies, to dangerous and fabricated side effects of the drug."

“Marijuana prohibition has historically targeted people of color and minorities and disproportionately affected them,” said Violet Cavendish, communications coordinator for The Marijuana Policy Project. “But I think it’s important to acknowledge this and not completely erase the term marijuana, because then doing so erases the history behind it and it’s easier to move on without understanding that policies have been using this word to target minorities.”

“We see that in the legal cannabis industry it’s still primarily white men who are gaining the most, financially, from this legal system,” says Dufton. “So, I have my skepticism about really embracing the term ‘cannabis’ as opposed to anything else, because it feels so much like a marketing effort to me.”

Maybe? TBH I don't know the answer here but given that it seems non racially centered, I'd wager a "yes" on it.

I really bet it’s one of those regional things such as soda, pop, or soda pop.

But, I have never heard it called marijuana outside of the media.

The participants rarely referred to the “reefer” (I’m pretty sure that is a pejorative as well) and instead called it a derivative of whatever delivery device they typically used. Whenever they talked about it at all.

This obsession with the substance comes mostly from the outside. It is similar to calling a cigarette, a tobacco.

Walking in to a room full of people announcing, “I say, kind sirs, may I partake of one of those marijuana/cannabis cigarettes?” is going to result in one of two responses.

Either uproarious laughter until the audience gets distracted by looking for a pizza or wondering why round things are so round. Secondly, someone will yell a slang term for LEO and the area will quickly clear.

A couple years ago. It was so potent I couldn’t handle it and gave it all away. This year I’m going with a sativa CBD strain. It’s already six feet tall and growing like a weed. Pot is the new zucchini here in Oregon. People are growing so much in their back yards that it’s hard to give the stuff away. Put a bag on someone’s porch, ring the bell and run. I don’t know how the dispensaries are making it.

And a plethora of options all in one spot. Flower, edibles, tinctures, extracts, soft drinks, topicals, gear, sometimes vaping lounges, etc.

That’s how they are making it, lol.

"Marijuana" was supposedly an insult for some before our grandparents were born, about the same time MJ itself was making sure nobody cared? "Chill, man."

As for those in whom injuries and reasons for divisive resentments always seem more valid and important than commonalities, and tolerance and broadmindedness are interpreted as bigotry, likely most don't get to the polls for Democrats anyway. For the same reason.

An interesting RW type that might grab onto this is the growing number of Hispanic conservatives who are becoming politically active as Republicans. In this era, with the Republican Party what it is...! But not because of this.

except in those silly movies they made us watch.

Even my mother called it “pot” lol, until the end of her days. I remember a thousand other terms for it, though “weed” wasn’t used much in my circle, nor was cannabis. I remember “smoke”, “green”, “doobage”, and all manner of other silly names.

Learning new information of limited to no value does not meet my definition of educational.
Informative? Maybe. Maybe in capital letters.
Educational? I think not.
This is one person's opinion based upon superficial research about a word. The issues around pot are orders of magnitude greater than what we call it.
