If there were any gods they wouldn't have allowed their prized posession (the U.S. supposedly) to be touched by a single republican. That's like having a convicted pedophile babysit your kids.

--the First Special Service Force. We have been to several of the reunions of "the Force" and always sing the national anthems to the US and Canada. At the reunion banquet, we always toast to the heads of state in each country. At the last reunion we attended, the toast was to the "office of the president of the United States!" BTW, we have always preferred the "O Canada" to the star spangled banner.

The phrase one nation indivisible stated our unity.

That emphasis has been lost to the generations of children who have recited it daily ever since it was changed.

God could have been added after one nation indivisible. The choice to place it between was, I believe, a clever manipulation but the states rights proponents who were also very active at the time.

I have no proof.

Anybody can swear to honor and obey, serve and protect, carry out duties and defend the Constitution. Just look at the hundreds of Republicans who broke their oath of office on January 6th. I suggest our actions prove who we are, not some oath to a flag or on a Bible.

Our actions do say more than our words. If our actions contradict our words then we suffer the legal consequences if any, and we should suffer the social consequences of betrayal. Of course, in practice, we don't like holding powerful people accountable, but that is, in theory, what the oath is about.

Trump was ousted from office for breaking his oath of office. He should be indicted for crimes, which occurred as a result of his breaking his oath of office, as should others who do the same.

The idea is not absurd. The implementation and accountability mechanisms may be.

I remember when it changed all of a sudden, too. We also had to recite the Lord's Prayer in public school, and sing "My Country 'Tis of Thee."

Before WWII, school kids saluted the flag with one arm extended, Nazi-style.

Had to say the pledge at the start of every town board meeting (was a supervisor for three terms) but I was silent for the "under god" part. Also, I crossed out the "so help me god" part of the oath of office.

The pledge was originally composed by a socialist Baptist minister (!) named Francis Bellamy. He originally wrote, “I pledge allegiance to my flag,” without mentioning which country, so that it could be used by any country.

Bellamy specifically demanded that no changes ever be made to his pledge—something that obviously was not respected. The final perversion, “under God,” was added in 1954 at the insistence of the Catholic Knights of Columbus, something that would have enraged Bellamy and horrified Jefferson and Madison.
