(20,591 posts)If there were any gods they wouldn't have allowed their prized posession (the U.S. supposedly) to be touched by a single republican. That's like having a convicted pedophile babysit your kids.

(10,459 posts)--the First Special Service Force. We have been to several of the reunions of "the Force" and always sing the national anthems to the US and Canada. At the reunion banquet, we always toast to the heads of state in each country. At the last reunion we attended, the toast was to the "office of the president of the United States!" BTW, we have always preferred the "O Canada" to the star spangled banner.

I like the change they made from in all thy sons command to in all of us command.

(10,175 posts)I never say "under God" to this day. I miss being able to say "one naked individual."

(7,366 posts)The phrase one nation indivisible stated our unity.
That emphasis has been lost to the generations of children who have recited it daily ever since it was changed.

(27,749 posts)the 50s, with McCarthyism etc. I remember leafing through copies of Reader's Digest in my neighbor's basement as a child. Every issue had all caps bold red headlines screaming about the COMMUNIST MENACE.

(7,366 posts)God could have been added after one nation indivisible. The choice to place it between was, I believe, a clever manipulation but the states rights proponents who were also very active at the time.
I have no proof.

(27,749 posts)Anybody can swear to honor and obey, serve and protect, carry out duties and defend the Constitution. Just look at the hundreds of Republicans who broke their oath of office on January 6th. I suggest our actions prove who we are, not some oath to a flag or on a Bible.

(11,767 posts)Our actions do say more than our words. If our actions contradict our words then we suffer the legal consequences if any, and we should suffer the social consequences of betrayal. Of course, in practice, we don't like holding powerful people accountable, but that is, in theory, what the oath is about.

(27,749 posts)Trump should be indicted for breaking his oath of office? That's why I think the idea is absurd.
Caliman73
(11,767 posts)Trump was ousted from office for breaking his oath of office. He should be indicted for crimes, which occurred as a result of his breaking his oath of office, as should others who do the same.
The idea is not absurd. The implementation and accountability mechanisms may be.

(27,165 posts)I remember when it changed all of a sudden, too. We also had to recite the Lord's Prayer in public school, and sing "My Country 'Tis of Thee."
Before WWII, school kids saluted the flag with one arm extended, Nazi-style.

(8,295 posts)Had to say the pledge at the start of every town board meeting (was a supervisor for three terms) but I was silent for the "under god" part. Also, I crossed out the "so help me god" part of the oath of office.
DFW
(60,185 posts)The pledge was originally composed by a socialist Baptist minister (!) named Francis Bellamy. He originally wrote, I pledge allegiance to my flag, without mentioning which country, so that it could be used by any country.
Bellamy specifically demanded that no changes ever be made to his pledgesomething that obviously was not respected. The final perversion, under God, was added in 1954 at the insistence of the Catholic Knights of Columbus, something that would have enraged Bellamy and horrified Jefferson and Madison.
