(75,610 posts)...women & nonwhite describes 69% of the population. Adjust for white males in that age group & she's likely net positive with 80-85% of people.
If the headline she references is real, it's pretty stupid.

(6,352 posts)I think it's a critique of a FOX news article (won't post link because of DU rules) that includes, toward the end, the following:
The actual headline is even more misleading: "Ocasio-Cortez's 'unfavorable' rating skyrockets, with most people viewing her negatively: poll"

here are some of the headlines about the Gallup poll
https://edition.cnn.com/2019/03/16/politics/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-polls-like-trump-poll-of-the-week/index.html
The congresswomans high profile so early in her term is exceeded only by that of Hillary Clinton in 2001, Gallup says.
https://www.usnews.com/news/national-news/articles/2019-03-15/alexandria-ocasio-cortezs-unfavorable-rating-climbs-gallup
and of course, the most biased of them all, Fucks Newz:
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/ocasio-cortezs-unfavorable-rating-sky-rockets-most-people-view-her-negatively-new-poll-shows
here is that twitter account's (@NumbersMuncher) 2nd tweet back then btw, as I showed they deleted the first one (the one AOC referenced) and tossed up a revised version

(60,740 posts)Seeing that she is plus 4 among all women, she is obviously worse than minus 14 for all men, as women are slightly more than 50 percent of the population.
There is even a bigger difference between old people and young people.

(13,686 posts)I'm generally opposed to the concept of groups and, even more, to the concept of talking about whether one is underwater or above water with "them." I like data and, when it comes to conclusions, especially rhetorical implications, I like to see the work used to obtain the answer provided. This is not AOC at her best, IMO.

Biophilic
(6,362 posts)is that I'm not sure I ever would have understood why that statement about "everyone except" irritated me so much. Damn these things are so deeply embedded. Yeah, I've been living it for 76 years, but most of those years I was at least half way awake and tried to see through the mists. These are hard times we are living through, but it sure it bringing the shit to the surface and making it easier to see and understand what's been going on for ever.

Media professionals know this. In fact, they count on it and many craft their "news stories" around it.
An old advertising trick. They know people will read "Nine out of ten dentists recommend Puke-It-Up gum" and miss the part that says "for their patients who chew gum".

(7,561 posts)but the headline doesn't match.
This poll is very similar to a February Fox News poll, which gave Ocasio-Cortez a -13 point net favorability rating because of a 26% favorable rating and a 39% unfavorable rating.

(4,677 posts)The complement of that headline is not that she's underwater with "older white men" -- polling usually isn't done along intersectional categories.
What it means is she's underwater with all the other groups in each demographic category, ie. she's underwater with a majority of voters over the age of 34, and she's underwater with male voters, and she's underwater with white voters.

(13,478 posts)and went on to retain her seat in the 2020 general election, winning in November by 44 points. Seems Rep. Ocasio-Cortez is above water with quite a few people in her district.
