A Rochester police officer is on desk duty after he was caught on camera forcefully handcuffing an emergency medical technician whod reportedly bumped his squad car with her ambulance door just outside a hospital.
According to News 10 Rochester, the Monroe Ambulance EMT was attempting to unload a patient in the ambulance bay area at Strong Memorial Hospital when she hit the cops car. The officer then demanded the EMT give him her identification, but the health-care worker was more concerned about getting the patient inside the hospital for treatment, the report says.
In a video of the incident obtained by News 10, the EMT can be seen standing next to a colleague at the hospital check-in desk with the patient on a stretcher. The investigator, who is wearing a red shirt, then rushes toward the EMT, pushing her into a wall before handcuffing her and escorting her out of the hospital. The medical worker was ultimately released from custody without charges being filed.
In a statement released Friday on Facebook, Monroe Ambulance said the EMT made the correct call in bringing the patient inside the hospital as soon as possible.
While the incident is still under internal investigation, our review of the video footage of the event indicates the safety of both our employee and that of her patient were jeopardized by the action of the officer, the statement said. Our employee demonstrated sound decision making by prioritizing the care of her patient and it is the expectation of all our care providers to do the same.

(10,497 posts)I liked that the Daily Beast article was subtitled petit tyrant because it is exactly who that cop is.
Why was the cop parked in an ambulance bay?
Please keep DU informed about this incident, I hope he gets disciplined.

(37,597 posts)I do not know if this is that or a cop led/followed an ambulance in this case. I do know ER bays will have cop cars in them

I honestly hadn't given much thought to emergency transport for shooting victims until I started looking into scoop and run, a longstanding practice in Philadelphia in which cops toss gunshot and stabbing victims into the backseats of their cars and rush them to a trauma center.Nov 19, 2018

'Scoop and Run' Can Save Lives. Why Don't More Police Departments Try It?

(30,197 posts)while following up on a case, but that indicates he wasn't there in an emergency capacity and could have parked elsewhere and walked his fat ass in.
Also, I want to see the damage to the car from a door opening onto it. A scratch? A small dent? I mean, even if the EMT took off his door as she tried to get her patient out, what fucking person blocks/delays an ambulance patient's entrance to an emergency room? He could have waited until the intake paperwork was done to get her info, his car obviously wasn't so damaged he couldn't drive it.

(17,578 posts)I understand your concern for the current climate regarding how the police forces work, but to 'abolish?'
Then what?
I'm interested in hearing your plan..... seriously.........

(27,014 posts)I encourage you to read up on police abolition, which is a theory that has been around for decades. The absence of police calls for the presence of something else, and, to keep it short, would mean much greater investments in education (including emotional intelligence, parenting, and social and mental health), the social safety net, jobs and job training, housing and so on. We know what causes violent crime, and yet we refuse to fund the very things that prevent those causes.

(8,103 posts)I'd like to hear about lots of money coming her way. The only question should be how much. And, the cop needs to move on.
I like the statement from her employer, who stated they wanted all their employees to behave in the same way she did.
Door smacks happen. They happen in life. Not too many people abuse their arrest powers by hauling in someone for having it happen, however.
She got roughed up, and didn't appear to be resisting. The last thing you'd expect to have happen to you while on the job saving a life. Can you imagine?
How can you be a cop with a straight face and explain that you are booking a person in an EMT uniform for clipping your squad door?
Money, money, money, money, money, money, money, oooooh, money, college money coming her way...or a house...her own company...ooooh, money! Go get it, girl! And, it came with tapes.

(26,848 posts)sociopaths more attracted to these kinds of jobs? All of the above, perhaps? "Normal", functioning adult human beings don't need training in order to contain themselves from assaulting other human beings. People talk about these grown ass men and women as if they're pre-school children we're trying to teach how to behave in society.

(17,578 posts)We need to know "WHO" is running the department - then "HOW" is it being trained - and "WHO" are they looking for to fill the roster.
We see it all of the time on TV - "Good Boss" / Bad Department" - "Bad Boss" / 'Concerned' cops....etc........
It takes serious involvement from the lead administrator (Mayor, Commissioner, etc.), administrative branch (city council, county board, etc), and COMMUNITY involvement (if the 'law' allows...).
The acquisition of "authority" is a powerful drug - there needs to be a 'program' in place to assure we don't get 'the wrong people' in there - probably the same problem the military has - perhaps lessons to be learned there......
