As a fiery viral speech she gave earlier this year made clear, Michigan state Sen. Mallory McMorrow isnt one to mince her words and she doesnt want other Democrats to do so either.
McMorrow thinks her party can be a lot more explicit when fighting GOP attacks, particularly as they struggle to defend their congressional majorities and retake state legislatures this fall.
McMorrow came to national attention after she confronted a Republican colleague who accused her of grooming young children and who fundraised off that claim. I want every child in this state to feel seen, heard, and supported, not marginalized and targeted because they are not straight, white, and Christian, she said in a speech that went viral in April.
Now, McMorrow is urging Democrats to take on Republicans in the same way, on everything from abortion rights to critical race theory to the economy. This past week, she sat down with Vox to describe exactly how they can do so.
This interview has been edited and condensed for length and clarity.

If theres anything that I have been critical of Democrats about, its that we have not paid attention to state legislatures in the way that Republicans have for the past few decades. So the New York Times did a really well-done piece a few weeks ago, really highlighting the reason that Roe fell is not because of the Supreme Court or the federal government. Its because Democrats lost 1,000 state legislature seats from 2007 to 2019. And you get more extreme chambers around the country who are passing these horrific laws that are designed to be challenged up to the Supreme Court.

(9,090 posts)dems lost 1000 no brainer state seats because they ignore 1200 - 1500 radio stations can be locally coordinated, unlike fox. increasingly, ignoring rw radio is the biggest political mistake in history. we let it beat up on our politicians all day and then we blame them for not getting it done, not being progressive enough....
michigan? UM and MSU endorse 18 stations that spend time attacking progressive michigan reps like mcmorrow.and likely they would target her for sticking her neck out, as trained, to make an example of her and get some threats sent her way. - Michigan St. 11, Michigan 7, Western Michigan 1
it's amazing the amount of national hate and threats aimed at progressives, like AOC while people who claim to support them have no fucking clue. progressives like her can only exist in places like brooklyn because of it. Limbaugh spent a segment heard by many millions making up excuses to repeat the phrase, in reference to AOC, "take her out" numerous times when she was a fresh'man' to set the national tone. AOC was too 'uppity' to est dems so they were going to "take her out". dems would get media to "take her out", and so on. like in 2008 when he made up a ridiculous pretext to say "obama's head needs to roll"
it goes on 15 hrs a day on 1200 radio stations

(4,165 posts)I've got a community radio background and to hear that "UM and MSU endorse 18 stations that spend time attacking progressive michigan reps" is very surprising.
Usually stations owned by universities and other educational institutions have a noncommercial educational license (NCE) and cannot take a stance for or against a candidate or party. Very few accept political ads either because keeping from going afoul of the rules for doing so is very tricky. Did an NCE run Rush Limbaugh?
Rules for commercial stations are very different.

(9,090 posts)that's just a few. even high schools do it there
i think A&M has a college near uvalde but i might be wrong----- they're making excuses for the NRA and assault weapons

(4,165 posts)I have been concerned about media consolidation in general and the swaths of the country that are receiving almost nothing but disinformation. But I did not know about these university deals. I should have.
I think you're right, there seems to be a Texas A&M AgriLife Center at Uvalde, doing research and serving as an Ag extension. Sul Ross State University has at least one campus in the area.
