There was a Supreme Court decision in 1989, putting some limits on abortion. I don't remember the details.
Next thing I see on TV, then Florida governor Martinez calling the legislators for a special session.
And I see a wall to wall men, in their dark suits making a decision about women's bodies and I was furious: How dare they?
Suburban woman are not necessarily anti feminism. Many chose to be stay at home mothers, and many work outside the home, many run their own businesses at home and others just prefer to be the main nurturing parent. Spouse may travel a lot.
But I am sure that most would react in a similar way to men making decisions for them - any decision, really - How Dare They?
Sure, many women object to abortions but at the end, it is the men who make these decisions. The Abbots and the Paxtons, and the DeSantiss and the Dobbss of the world.
We have to be visceral. Some years back someone commented that the phrase "pro life" is visceral, while "pro choice" is more of a consumer talk.
Of course, we know that pro choice is about information and facts and personal decisions. But as we've seen with Trump, his appeal is visceral. I hope that we've accepted this.
So I suggest we appeal to suburban women who may not be excited about Democrats right now, many are angry at the two years of school closing - a separate topic - but they may be moved by "How dare they!" With appropriate T-shirts and flyers.
OK, stepping down from my soap box. But I still see red as I remember that image of the Florida assembly.
