My mother had to put her beloved dog down today. She is sobbing because of this and the fact that while it was happening, the dog was licking her face with an "I'm sorry" look on his face, sort of blaming himself for this.

You can see the cancer in his face
Goodbye, Dude. You have a miserable life with terrible owners that abused you until my mother adopted you. At least in the last five years of your life, you were a spoiled, pampered prince.

(81,277 posts)My little dog was the light of my life. We were soul mates, I know it sounds crazy.
She went very suddenly with kidney failure.
But I did get another little dog some years later and I love her.
Not quite the same however.
Sending good vibes to your mom and Dude.

(81,277 posts)Yes it took me some time to get over it.
It was years ago and I still think about her.
May sound strange, but I can feel her with me.

I'm so glad that for the second part of his life he was spoiled and loved and given the care and devotion he deserved. Something special brought him and your mom together, and that love will be his legacy.

(16,271 posts)Cancer in dogs just goes like wildfire. I know from experience that one can have the vets agressively treat it but in the end there isn't really much that can stop it.
Just know your mom gave her friend some really good years.

(22,592 posts)I really don't think dogs think that way. He was just concerned because his special human was upset, and he wanted to comfort her the only way he knew how, sweet little angel dog that he was.
I am so, so sorry for your mother's loss and hope she can find some measure of peace in the knowledge that he has been spared untold suffering and now rests comfortably in the arms of whatever kind angel is in charge of welcoming all the greatly loved beasts who have had to precede their beloved humans into the next world. There he will wait, safe and sound, for her eventual arrival. Blessings be upon him, and her, and all others who knew and loved him.

They never really leave us...not ever. I suspect he was licking your mom in love and thanks for the wonderful life she gave him and for doing the kindest thing to do for him even though it was tearing her apart. R.I.P. Dude.

(12,116 posts)Adrift! A little boat adrift!
And night is coming down!
Will no one guide a little boat
Unto the nearest town?
So Sailors say on yesterday
Just as the dusk was brown
One little boat gave up its strife
And gurgled down and down.
So angels say on yesterday
Just as the dawn was red
One little boat o'erspent with gales
Retrimmed its masts redecked its sails
And shot exultant on!

At least hes not suffering, but you have to hate when that happens. Hopefully, lots of good memories.

It's never easy to say goodbye to a beloved pet. It sounds like your Mom gave him a great home and lots of love. He knew and appreciated it.

Rapidly growing soft tissue tumor around the front right shoulder.
The tumor either passed a clot or burst, releasing toxins. Went from pretty much OK to critical in under an hour.
He had hours to live when we decided we needed to take him down.
So, we feel your pain.
