The January 6 Hearings Are Wounding Trump
July 20, 2022 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard
What happened instead, a slow drip of negative coverage, may be just as damaging to the former president. Six weeks into the committees public hearing schedule, an emerging consensus is forming in Republican Party circles including in Trumps orbit that a significant portion of the rank-and-file may be tiring of the non-stop series of revelations about Trump.
The fatigue is evident in public polling and in focus groups that suggest growing Republican openness to an alternative presidential nominee in 2024.

(2,937 posts)whatever it is that draws people to trump. I don't think his power has nearly the reach that a mob boss like trump does, so he is perhaps not as scary to wimps like Miss Lindsey and other sycophants who are terrified of anyone with that kind of power (would R's kill for him?). Could be wrong.

(30,166 posts)He doesn't have the fame and "glamour" of TFG. I mean, DeSantis doesn't even have his own reality show! He'll be seen by some of Trump's base as just another life-long politician no matter how much crazy he spouts.

(12,046 posts)As batshit crazy as it is to categorize Trump's ignorance and narcissism as some sort of charisma, thats the appeal he has for 40% of the country who can't quit him. They don't care if he stands for what they do or for anything at all they just like that he flips to bird to everyone they hate with a smile.

(72,126 posts)Desantis is relatively competent and not a buffoon. The incompetent buffoons who worship at TFG's altar won't go for that.

(3,043 posts)I heard one commentator ask yesterday. No one is going to vote for someone who comes across as a grouch.
However, like other said here, DeSantis is smarter. He knows which culture war issues to embrace and which ones to shy away.

(8,195 posts)I hate saying that because it implies Trump has personality, but I think the phrase is accurate in the sense that it describes the phenomenon. His cult flocks to him because he's "TRUMP", with an (entirely fake) larger-than-life persona that's he's spent decades cultivating.
DeSantis doesn't have that. Now, that only applies to the Trump cult. DeSantis may be more palatable to non-cultists, I really don't know.
I saw on morning jo some poll (I wish I could remember who did the poll) among Republicans, they still favored tfg over other republicans that might run. I think it was like 53% for tfg.

(18,823 posts)He doesnt have the national appeal. Fingers crossed, he losses his re-election which will seriously dent his political career.

(8,195 posts)...if the votes can be split, with Trump cultists refusing to vote for DeathSantis & vice-versa, it would certainly help us.

(2,922 posts)Hes also a narcissistic criminal. Whats in his favor is that he is more intelligent and calculating than Trump. What doesnt work in his favor is that he lacks Trumps MAGAt
magnetism.

(27,615 posts)While some moderate Rep wouldn't vote for Trump, they may see DeSantis as a good candidate. A Harvard Law School and Yale University grad, he's a JAG officer in the Navy, served in Iraq, and is still in the Naval Reserve. This guy is no dummy and he's more devious and cutthroat than Trump. He's worshipped by the Florida Republicans.
DeSantis wants to control everything and has overruled his Republican state reps in drawing up a more Republican favorable redistricting map.

June 2, 2022
June 2 (Reuters) - The Florida Supreme Court on Thursday declined to block the state's new congressional map drawn by Governor Ron DeSantis' administration, likely ensuring the plan will remain in effect for November's midterm elections and giving Republicans a boost in their quest to win control of Congress.
The plan has been challenged by several voting and civil rights groups as unlawful because it dismantles a majority-Black district in north Florida held by Democratic U.S. Representative Al Lawson. The groups have also argued that the map violates state constitutional provisions intended to prevent partisan gerrymandering, in which district lines are manipulated to benefit a political party.
The new map gives Republicans the advantage in 20 of the state's 28 congressional districts, four more seats than the party currently occupies.
In a surprise move, DeSantis created his own map, vetoed two less aggressive maps that the Republican-controlled legislature passed and called lawmakers into a special session to vote on his proposal. The governor has argued that Lawson's district, which connects Black communities some 200 miles (320 km) apart, is a racial gerrymander that violates federal law.
Republicans need to flip five Democratic seats in the U.S. House of Representatives to win a majority, which would allow them to stymie much of Democratic President Joe Biden's agenda. Overall, Republicans have gained approximately three seats nationally solely due to redistricting, according to the Cook Political Report.

(6,115 posts)I don't know if they're doing it purposefully, but it's having an effect that can't be ignored. And they're leaving the door open to more, if warranted. Request: closer to the midterms, please.
If America sees how fucking corrupt the entire GOP is, then DeSatan doesn't even have a chance. He's just another version of the orange fuckstick. My hope is that the CORRUPTION turns people away as much as the actual criminal acts will.
The Dems need to tie this albatross to the entire GOP.
