Marc Elias: This is how Republicans are planning to steal elections in the future.

https://www.democracydocket.com/news/a-constitutional-crisis-is-brewing-in-pennsylvania/

To see the future of election subversion, look at Pennsylvania today. More than a month after the most recent primary election was settled, three counties are still refusing to certify accurate results. These counties offer an unfortunate preview of what to expect in the future.

It all started simply enough at the end of 2021 when the outcome of a local judicial election in Lehigh County hinged on whether a small number of contested undated mail-in ballots would be counted. These ballots were cast by eligible voters, received on time by the county and had properly signed return envelopes. However, the return envelopes were missing a handwritten date next to the voters’ signatures. In litigation over these ballots, a federal court of appeals ruled in May that the missing dates were legally immaterial (meaning unrelated to voters’ eligibility) and ordered the mail-in ballots to be counted. A month later in June, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a last-ditch effort to block the ballots from being counted and the judicial race was decided.

While that case was proceeding, Pennsylvania held primary elections for the U.S. Senate on May 17. Once again, there was a close election where undated mail-in ballots were at issue. When a Republican candidate in the race filed a lawsuit to require the counting of the undated mail-in ballots, a state court, following the reasoning of the federal court’s order in the Lehigh County judicial election, ordered the mail-in ballots to be counted.

In normal times, this would be the end of the story. But we do not live in normal times.

. . .

This is how Republicans are planning to steal elections in the future. By refusing to count lawful votes and then certifying incomplete and inaccurate results, Republicans hope to create a veneer of legitimacy around an illegitimate outcome. Our system is ill equipped to address this looming crisis.

Sometime soon, the remaining three counties in Pennsylvania will at last certify their election results for the 2022 primary. But the current stalemate is a warning siren of what is to come. Pennsylvania is in a constitutional crisis right now as three counties continue to delay the accurate results of a primary election held nearly six weeks ago. While this may be a low-stakes crisis given the dispute is over a now uncontested primary election, it is still a crisis nonetheless. We must learn from this and take steps to address it before November, when the stakes will be much higher.

He put country before party and himself.

And I remember people saying, well if we give the GOP the WH, maybe they will calm down and stop their brutal war on the Clintons and Dems.

Little did they know what was in store for the US. We were in a hand basket to hell.

That's why he walked away from it. On the other hand Chump himself walked into the 2016 race with the intention of doing exactly that. He fully expected to lose in 2016 and then his plan was to disrupt everything. It shocked the shit out of him when he "won."

Well the point is that ANY Democrat would do the same as Al Gore. But it's scary as hell to realize how many Repukes would do as Chump did.

Before the votes are counted and in direct denial of the facts.

Trump took it a step further and tried to stop the congress from certifying the actual winner of the election.

The reality is that the GOP is no longer a political party. It is a crime syndicate run by ruthless sociopaths. They do not care about democracy or Americans lives.

But I was referring to his race against Hillary Clinton.

Most of the polls and pundits had Hillary winning until the last few days before the election. Chump was planning major disruptions and hissy-fits, but then he couldn't because he was declared the winner.

They threw out thousands of ballots for minor clerical errors, such as not signing the outside envelope or not signing in exactly the place specified by law but not identified on the ballot. The solution of course is to design ballots with clear instructions and even a color for where to sign and date a ballot, but by making both their mail ballots and even the applications to vote by mail confusing Republicans hope to disenfranchise thousands of voters in the heavily Democratic cities. Rural Republican voters in the small towns will be called to come fix their ballots, or they’ll just be counted anyway.

In our county, they would intentionally create a ballot/envelope that weighed a couple ounces more than first class postage of one stamp. They would not put tiny print where the stamp goes to tell people it needed more than a first class single postage stamp.
People not in the know would put on a single stamp and mail it....It would take days to be returned to the sender with Insufficient Postage stamped on it. If they voted in the last days of the election, it would come back to them sometimes after the deadline to vote.
Cute, huh.

The Republican's have figured out that they cannot win without cheating or corruption...

Just how F***ing "American" is that????????

It's only supposed to be used in an immediate, lifesaving situation, such as when a passenger is stuck in a door. Pulling it short of those circumstances causes all kinds of trouble and creates other hazards. How long before people are held accountable for frivolously pulling that cord?

even if Republicans won, they wouldn’t have much power. None of their ideas would get through the Senate and signed by Biden. And any phony investigation they undertake would be laughed at by the DOJ. They could (and probably would) impeach Biden but that wouldn’t get the 66 votes in the Senate to remove him. But yeah, we need to keep both houses of Congress.
