Manhattan DA backed off indicting Trump because he was 'focused on the risk that we could lose': ex-prosecutor
A special prosecutor who quit the team earlier this year says Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg Jr. backed off from the notion of indicting former President Donald Trump because he was worried about losing the case.
The investigation had probed whether Trump fraudulently overvalued multiple assets to secure loans and then undervalued them to minimize taxes.
It was launched by Bragg's predecessor Cyrus Vance, with Bragg taking over the case when he took office in January.

Trump Criminal Probe Is Ongoing Despite Departures, D.A. Bragg Says
Last Updated: April 8, 2022 at 12:45 a.m. ET
In a rare public statement, Bragg denied that the three-year investigation was winding down or that a grand jury term expiring this month would impede his offices ability to bring charges.
Citing secrecy rules, the district attorney said he couldnt discuss details of the probe but pledged to publicly disclose findings when its over.
In recent weeks, the Manhattan District Attorneys Office has been repeatedly asked whether our investigation concerning former President Donald J. Trump, the Trump Organization, and its leadership is continuing, Bragg wrote. It is.

Fella just lacks the guts to defend the country.

(96,882 posts)This is a State-level finance case. Nothing that would prohibit him from running for office.
The Magistrate
(96,043 posts)A few jabs set up the cross. Keep an opponent busy, give him lots of chances to fuck up. I'm not aware of any law declaring a felon cannot hold national office. It is accumulated public defeat and disgrace that will bar him from office, by removing financial support, and by discouraging many supporters. Those whose disappointment leads to radical action will discredit the creature further.

(7,864 posts)Perhaps you are not outraged at a serial criminal is getting special, preferential treatment because he is rich, noisy, and powerful, but the rest of us think that he deserves to have his crimes investigated.
If you have a better idea on what the Manhattan DA should do in a case of millions of dollars worth of financial crimes, let's hear it. Please explain why this is funny or we are just overreacting or whatever. Just let's not have the old "outside opinions are worthless" nonsense. If you have better information, tell us.
As difficult as it can be to convey most emotions in text, our outrage & anger are obvious. So are mockery and self-importance.
The Magistrate
(96,043 posts)There is something to the precise point raised, though. It is common here to declare a public figure whose actions aren't popular did so because of blackmail or bribery. It's a bit off-kilter as a go-to explanation.

(61,033 posts)that trump is not a big, bad, invulnerable bogeyman. He should've listened to his prosecutors.
Talk about blowing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He could've written his own ticket into the governor's mansion, or even the WH after being the one to finally get trump.

(102,663 posts)Cy Vance milked this for as long as he possibly could without bringing it further than lip-service and when he picked this Bragg guy, he was fully aware that Bragg would pull it and kill it. Because Cy never wanted it to ever see the light of day. Why? Because he's protected the orangeanus for a long time and can't afford to be found out. Much like the sister who was a judge, she resigned before she could be investigated. Pretty slick racket they have there.

(96,882 posts)I was under the impression that the voters of New York County picked him. Something about an election?
2naSalit
(102,663 posts)And they made the voter think he would follow through when that was not the case. Yeah, so he went through an easy election which almost mattered, he still killed the case.

(2,585 posts)That should not be a calculation when enforcing the law. The Grand Jury makes that decision, if they indict you have to follow through with a trial. If the jury acquits so be it. Not even trying to do his job should be a crime.

(1,931 posts)I have nothing to back this up, but it just sounds like a can of worms that Trumps defense could open up. Selective prosecution etc.
The Magistrate
(96,043 posts)If one thing has been made abundantly clear in this passage, it is that high end real estate is a criminal enterprise, a money-laundering scheme and haven for tax evasion.
I doubt a selective prosecution defense would succeed in court, and of course the cure is to round up the rest as well....
