A young man firing a toy gun at people was fatally shot in the Bronx early Thursday — and an off-duty city Dept. of Corrections officer was later arrested for the slaying.

Dion Middleton, 45, was hit with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.

Raymond Chaluisant, 18, was firing a toy gun from inside a car, and Middleton allegedly returned fire, shooting more than once, sources said. It was unclear who Chaluisant had been firing at, cops said.

Police initially believed Chaluisant was firing a water gun, but after further investigation determined it was an “Orbeez” gun, which resembles a pistol and fires gel projectiles.

Middleton works in training at the NYPD shooting range in Rodman’s Neck, and he allegedly went to work following the fatal shooting, sources said.

Someone who is 18 is not a teen? They are literally teen-aged. A person can be both a teen WhiskeyGrinder Jul 2022 #3

…and, if he was firing something that looked like a gun at people, no way they are getting a conviction for this.

(socially, culturally) and an adult (legally) at that age.

It's not okay that people accept the notion that cops being scared gives then the right to kill unarmed teenagers. They literally have a license to kill. You think a white kid using a toy guy would be killed in this situation?

Eastlake police report uptick in incidents involving toy Orbeez guns

By Chris Anderson
Published: May. 25, 2022 at 6:45 AM EDT

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Police in Eastlake shared a series of images to social media that show how Orbeez guns can closely resemble a real firearm, creating additional challenges for law enforcement and members of the public.

The department said investigators have received several reports recently for incidents involving Orbeez guns, which fire water-filled projectiles.

The toys have became popular in recent weeks as part of a nationwide trend that involves individuals sharing videos on social media of themselves shooting small beads from the high-powered water guns at random people, Wooster police previously described.

“When they are seen in public they cause understandable alarm which then brings about a police response. We strongly encourage parents to monitor their kids if they have these guns and to ensure they are used on private property with proper safeguards in place,” Eastlake police shared on Facebook.

but this is an absolute failure of parenting. It is completely unreasonable to put "water guns" that look identical to real guns on the street in the hands of 18-year-olds (firing at people out of cars in the Bronx) and then be shocked when the public and the police actually mistake those fake guns for real guns and tragic accidents like this occur.

Were it up to me, they would not allow these "toys" to be made. But if manufacturers are dumb enough to not realize why this is a problem, then it is up to parents to not allow these "toys" to come into their households. Ever.

This is a horrible tragedy. There will be more like this. They need to get these fake toy guns that look exactly like the real thing off the streets or convey to the person "playing" with one that when you have one in your hands, you appear armed to the police and the public and will likely be shot. Unfortunately, we all know how well teens listen, so not having the guns in the first place is likely the only way to keep them safe. Tragic.
