Too many voters don't understand the overall picture. They see Republican Cheney up there and don't know that 95% of the other Republicans oppose these hearings and that if they take over next year they will kill the committee and do everything they can to hide the truth and turn the focus on some new bullshit "crisis". Or have Hearings on their own about Hunter Biden's laptop or worse, how the 2020 election was "stolen".
They will unthinkingly vote for some Trumper candidate because they say they will do something about inflation or gas prices (they can't do a damn thing) and we will see the slow moving coup go forward as they continue to chip away with Democracy.
I get that Cheney lends legitimacy to the Hearings, but she also obscures that the GOP is still the Party of Trump.
I need to make clear that this is an observation about voters, not a criticism of the committee or Cheney. Everything they can do before next year is welcome.

(37,341 posts)After 4 years of Trump, we LOST seats in the House and Senate.
People vote against the current President in the midterms. It's a gut reaction, not a logical decision.

(19,382 posts)At first, There was a list of names submitted to the house on who the republicans wanted and it was turned down. They ended up with two. We couldnt not have any.

(37,341 posts)I am not criticizing the committee so much as looking at how many voters think, or rather don't think.

(19,382 posts)Approve of the way theyve been conducted. I think it helps in November.

(37,341 posts)I hope it is enough to overcome the normal midterm bias.
I think the Dems need to make clear that 90% of the GOP running oppose the Hearings and support Trump.

(28,705 posts)... doesn't change the fact that there would be downsides.
I am not saying she should not be co-chair, just seeing some downside we may face.

(37,341 posts)but see the headlines that Republican Cheney is heading the committee.

(81,161 posts)And Cheney made it clear that these were R witnesses, Trump's own handpicked staff.
I think this offsets the issues you raise.
And i am not saying she should not be there, just seeing what it could also mean.
In November, the Dems should make clear that the GOP will kill this committee and everything they have done.

(81,161 posts)She is certainly not the face of the GOP by any means.

Just A Box Of Rain
(5,104 posts)Having an established conservative Republican like Elizabeth Cheney making withering (and well-reasoned) attacks on TFG is having an effect. Especially with those who are Republicans themselves and/or Trump voters.
She is a major asset to the committee.

(37,341 posts)I am not saying she should not be there, just looking at how many swing voters could see it.

(41,544 posts)I'm guessing that by this fall Liz Cheney will be an Independent candidate. Maybe she can win as an independent, maybe not. But she could receive some kind of appointment in the Executive Branch if she fails to win her seat again. Liz Cheney has earned that, and I believe Biden will reward her with something.
I didn't mean this as a criticism of the committee, rather an observation about voters.
Just A Box Of Rain
(5,104 posts)Liz Cheney seems like a die-hard Republican to me and one who is committed to saving her party from Trumpist-populism against all odds.

(17,368 posts)Idiots will vote for Repuqs for sure, but they would have done that regardless. Thats my view. There is no significant downside regarding votes and voters to having Liz Cheney on the Special Committee even as Vice Chair.
edhopper
(37,341 posts)who go from Dem to Repub. Those are the ones I mean. Almost half the voters register as independents.
