On November 5th at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California, Pat Benatar will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.
During a recent interview with Melissa Ruggieri of USA Today, Benatar revealed that she is no longer playing one of her most popular songs at her concerts, an excerpt follows:
USA Today: Youve been singing those big vocal songs including Heartbreaker on this tour. Youve also been playing (The Beatles) Helter Skelter. Why that song?
Benatar: "Because I want to have some (expletive) fun! Were doing a lot of songs we dont always play like 'In The Heat Of The Night' and 'I Need A Lover'. We have what we call the 'Holy 14,' songs that if we dont play them, youll give us (a hard time). And were not doing 'Hit Me With Your Best Shot' and fans are having a heart attack and Im like, Im sorry, in deference to the victims of the families of these mass shootings, Im not singing it. I tell them, if you want to hear the song, go home and listen to it. (The title) is tongue-in-cheek, but you have to draw the line. I cant say those words out loud with a smile on my face, I just cant. Im not going to go on stage and soapbox I go to my legislators but thats my small contribution to protesting. Im not going to sing it. Tough."

(18,456 posts)... for the last five years or so. It has always struck me as an advocacy for assault or domestic violence - we certainly need less of that perspective not more.
Why excite toxic masculinity and possibly trigger assault and battery when we can easily avoid it by steering clear and circumventing those issues.
Thank you Pat Benatar for your insightful approach to pressing social issues and making an effort to better the commonwealth to achieve a more civil and safe community for all.

(33,643 posts)It's really not about anyone getting shot in the firearms sense, or opening themselves to domestic assault.
It's a boxing metaphor, she's simply expressing her own toughness and bravado like a boxer before a fight. Except the subject is ... love.
Maybe this will assuage your sensibilities and let you enjoy it in the future, if you used to in the past.

(75,224 posts)Nothing to do with guns, but I too like they've dropped it from their setlist.

(33,643 posts)I always took the theme of that of that song to be 'before I decide if I like you, let's see how good at sex you actually are'.
Bit of a female empowerment theme, in my mind.

(18,456 posts)But the fact remains that in contemporary vernacular and common parlance,...
"Hit Me With Your Best Shot" denotes a human fist striking a solid blow to a human body part.
The thought of a gun shot - never occurred to me,.. until I read this. Brandishing a weapon and firing it at a human being one hopes would be a last - last - last resort to quell a very grave danger of imminent life threatening bodily harm.

(33,643 posts)wherein a woman is challenging a man to impress her enough to fall in love with him.
I totally respect her decision to stop playing it, and yours to no longer favor the song. When you put both 'fire' and 'shot' in the same chorus, it DOES kinda sound like a reference to guns, and I'd imagine that's why she doesn't do the song anymore.
That said, it's fairly obvious that Hit Me With Your Best Shot does NOT denote a human fist striking a solid blow to a human body part (or an actual shooting)... in the context of the song overall.
Just sayin.

(4,557 posts)But its most common meanings now would be something like, "give me your best effort" or "I can take your strongest attempt to challenge me".
It's her song and her concert, but this is a meaningless gesture. Associating it with gun violence is just silly.

(75,224 posts)I looked it up. It was released the week before my 24th birthday.
I was in a band with a woman singer at that time, so it immediately found it's way onto our setlist.
I loved playing that solo. It would be easier now. I'm much better now.

(33,643 posts)The couple that inspired me to pick up guitar, while in college (female singer was my girlfriends roomie, and her BF could shred, and they used to play around SLO, CA at the time), used to ROCK that song, it was kinda their signature song.
Her BF taught me some of the first licks and chords I ever knew.
Also the first time I ever sang live in front of a bar full of people was when they let me come up to sing You Shook Me All Night Long with them.

One of the songs I made every intermediate or advanced guitar student learn was "Shook Me".
It's not technically difficult, but has loads of "guitarisms" and requires smooth.
Weird that that song carries history for both of us.

IMHO success at YSMANL is very much about timing, palming, and strumming technique. And settling into the pocket.
I can play the rhythm line pretty decent as I'm good at those basics, but I can't really shred lead stuff at all. Never really learned, I was mostly into singing and strumming the acoustic to impress the ladies

A great song that she does is Hell is for Children.

(2,974 posts)it's nothing more than an attempt to make it about her band or attract attention. No one thinks her song is about mass shootings, and they never have.
But hey, whatever. It's her show. She gets to make any statement she wants.
