(81,545 posts)He thought enough of them to want to reach out. That can sway things. For every five-to-ten dyed-in-the-wool conservatives, there might be one or two who are vacillating, maybe not quite sure anymore even though they don't believe in abortion. Or maybe they've mostly been surrounded by arch-conservative family members and relatives, neighbors, local store owners, radios always on hate-radio stations, every restaurant or bar with a TV will be tuned to Pox Noise, and they never heard from the other side before. Maybe they've never been exposed to other opinions or lines of thinking. Maybe it's the teenager with knuckle-dragger parents, and the kid's started noticing things don't add up the way Mom and Dad always say they do.
And word-of-mouth will spread. And he's nice. And clean-cut. And polite. And he treats everyone with a basic respect. He'll inevitably win some people over.
Even ONE! Even ONE who can be turned, is a VICTORY!
And all those ones start to add up.

(70,274 posts)yeah, he's getting out there and it is a stone cold fact that if a candidate shakes your hand, or knocks on your door you.will.vote.for.them.
and you'll tell your friends.

(10,844 posts)He did it when he ran against Cruz and he's doing it now because like John Fetterman in PA, an every county, every vote counts strategy is the way to break the GOP stranglehold.
I did a little poking around yesterday regarding the political leanings in the state. The large population centers are overwhelmingly Democratic. The rural areas, not so much. In Texas, the number of rural communities is enormous. But O'Rourke or Fetterman do not have to take all those districts to win. They need to pinch the numbers, lessen the impact by getting their message out and encouraging the rural voter to consider an alternative to an unpopular Governor and the trajectory of poor leadership, the effect that has on them and their families..
Listening to Beto, it's clear (to me at least) that he has improved his presentation since his last run. He's not jumping on tables or waving his arms all over the place. He's pulled it back while speaking truth to power in a local context.
It's still a very steep climb but he's now within 5 pts of Abbott. If he can continue to spark the interest of the rural electorate, have them come out and listen as he obviously did in Lubbock, the man has a shot to turn the applecart upside down.
Tim Ryan in Ohio is turning his campaign into a true horserace. A lot of pundits wrote Ryan off as a lost cause saying he had no chance whatsoever against Vance. Now? The tune of the coverage is beginning to change.
Beto for Texas would be a wonderful thing!
