Spiral staircases may look beautiful and save on space. But I've never been comfortable using them and I certainly won't be depending on one at age 73.

(45,516 posts)Ive fallen down too many times throughout my life to be overconfident. Born klutz.Im also betting they were high heels and liquor involved

(23,205 posts)so it may be that she just fell. But high heels on a spiral staircase - that would be difficult at any age.

(35,006 posts)but refused to get one. A bad hip, alone, is bad enough, but that and any sort of staircase, spiral or otherwise, is asking for trouble.

(5,211 posts)I almost fell while I carried a laundry basket. From that day I used the outside deck stairs to get to that level. I would never have a spiral staircase in my home. Not the safest option.

(5,211 posts)We never rented that cottage again. I made sure there were no spiral staircases in our future.

But, I'd never have a house where the only floor to floor path was a spiral.

(23,205 posts)The ones in these clips aren't as bad as some of the ones I've seen when looking for an apartment. You're right, they are more like a ladder, but you don't normally carry stuff up a ladder.

(52,729 posts)As I discovered walking up the spiral staircase of the Notre Dame Cathedral. I must have been in my thirties and one of my knees caps suffered its first case of carpal tunnel syndrome. But, it's a birth issue and my knees aren't properly aligned.
Ivana either had one of her knees give in, or she slipped.

(42,444 posts)They can be put in for a few thousand $. My dad and stepmother needed a Stairmaster and I think they put one in for about $2,000.
Or for a little more investment, a standard elevator shaft could have gone in where the spiral staircase was currently standing. It's not always about looks, it's also about function and physical safety.

(33,424 posts)It is 5 stories. No need for a stairmaster.

(54,343 posts)the place and I'd remove it (and the addition) if I could afford to. They're dangerous. Maybe great for a tight space, but otherwise broken hip traps.

(51,308 posts)I fell both down and up it many times as a fast-moving teen lol. Wooden steps and a cast iron railing. I bounced pretty well in those days.
I don't think I'd be nearly as comfortable on it nowadays.

(15,909 posts)At least with a spiral the sides would be slowing you down and give you more places to grab onto (or simply get caught up in) rather than your body heading straight down a slope almost unimpeded.

It really got ridiculous a few days ago, and I mean right here on DU.
