Rep. Cheney and Rep. Kinzinger have indicated that the Secret Service is being uncooperative with the J6 Committee and that they need to hear from the agency about the events on January 6th and about the text messages that were deleted.
What's come to light is that the Service has some very serious problems that need immediate attention.
The Secret Service is part of the Department of Homeland Security which is a part of the Executive Branch. Given the obvious problems facing the Service, couldn't President Biden step in and assert his executive authority to get to the bottom of this mess?
Why would the President step back since these folks are responsible for so many lives?
It's a mess and even from this distant vantage point, something is very rotten in the Service. Keep in mind, this is hardly the first instance of problems with this Service.
The President should clean it up ASAP.

(141,926 posts)We know Biden. He isn't the sort to interject himself into investigations. And this one is a minefield because they are responsible for keeping HIM safe.
He'll sit back and hope the IG can get to the bottom of it, hope the J6 can shed some light on it, and if needed, hope that Mayorkas can do something about it. He'll do all that before even coming close to getting involved himself.
The whole department needs to be cleaned out and new trustworthy people need to be hired. But that takes a hell of a lot of time. And how do you train all new people to replace these fucks without them getting wind of it and possibly putting protectees in danger?
It's a fucking mess.

(34,285 posts)But the last thing Joe Biden and Garland will do is something drastic because of their misplaced belief that we are still a two party democracy.
I understand their belief and why they might still have it, but those days are gone. I am very upset.

(196,491 posts)The Secret Service (SS) was very weakened when it move to Homeland. It used to be its own thing. Very elite. If a State Trooper got the call, they went. Long hours.
PJ, consider the personalities of these people. This is fighter pilot level. Risk and play. Several known incidents and one I was told second hand.
Consider that these guards could turn. Thats the worst thing any person in a seat of power could imagine. This isnt Biden specific. I have to guess the sense theres uncertainty between the parties involved.

(1,372 posts)Perhaps President Biden should 'step-up OR step-in' (immediately) and issue some type of Executive Order wherein a different authority (maybe an upper echelon grouping of selected senior military officers) oversees the US Secret Service until such time as the current situational problems can be resolved.
It would also be okay with me if the president had final approval of any necessary actions involving the USSS.
Something needs doing - and that right soon (!).

(6,115 posts)Does anybody think he'll go in all heavy-handed? His life - and the lives of his family, Harris and her family, Pelosi and her family, etc. would al be in danger if he turns on people that are already suspected to be untrustworthy.

(3,818 posts)...these became the core of his "private army" deployed to be his muscle with less accountability than federal marshalls. When the "Little Green Men" showed up without badges on Portland's streets (along with the Proud Boys), protesters were rounded up without juridiction or accountability.

(36,925 posts)The reason Trump fired so many of his appointees is because he thought he could directly control every aspect of the federal government through short circuiting federal controls and creating chaos.
However thats not how it was intended or should work. There is a process that should work through a system of administration which provides some measure of protection from corruption regardless of who is in power.

(32,318 posts)Alejandro Mayorkas is the Director of DHS, before invoking President Biden, why not ask what Mayorkas is doing?
Why allow the DHS IG, a Trump appointee, to head the investigation? Why not ask where is the FBI?
I remember the FBI investigating Hillary Clinton for 1 year before absolving her.

(33,424 posts)He has the authority (and responsibility) to ask those questions if he thinks there is a problem. The heads of all three serve at the pleasure of the president and can be removed at any time if warranted.

(32,318 posts)I would think that Mayorkas could suspend or fire agents. I would guess that the agents have protection from being fired, procedure would have to be followed.
