General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe only thing that will heal this nation is "justice".
There are people that do not understand anything else. They will lie, rob, and steal until they are brought to justice. It is only then that they will stop their criminal ways.
They must be investigated. They must be subpoenaed. They must be charged. They must stand trial. They must be sentenced. That is the only thing they understand.
Until that happens, we will continue to be plagued by lies and lawlessness.
Nothing will be better until there is accountability.

(32,323 posts)the coup is ongoing because people have not been held accountable.
Two weeks ago Trump called a Wisconsin official and asked him to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The Wisconsin legislature is looking into whether they can do that.
In Pa. 3 counties have not certified the May primary election yet.
DOJ did absolutely nothing to stop the pro-Trump fake company, Cyber Ninja fraudit in Arizona.
It is good to see DOJ action against the fake electors, including 2 people from Arizona.
I hope we can overcome a Magat rigged election and prevail in November, we must.

(6,115 posts)NONE OF US KNOW what the DOJ is doing. Until they do it. I certainly don't. And neither do you. Even the experts were stunned by the Marc Short testimony! The DOJ is damn good at keeping what they're doing secret when they want to keep it secret.
But hey, instead of attacking each other, maybe we should pay attention to what HAS been happening within the justice system: https://www.emptywheel.net/2022/07/16/what-doj-was-doing-while-everyone-was-whinging-doj-wasnt-doing-anything/
This encompasses a lot of different investigations and a lot of different prosecutors, but it's quite a bit. For one thing, I wasn't aware until I read this that the DOJ has several J6 grand juries. So I recommend everybody read it. I think you'll all feel a little bit better after you do. Justice is coming.

(7,215 posts)With the crimes they have committed, because some of the citizens believe if they are not charged, then it must of not happened.
People would watch the trials of these traitors, and see it for what it is, the biggest corrdinated attack against the country since the Civil War.

(7,794 posts)In this case we are asking "good people" to take a stand against injustice. These people are being asked to throw the first stones, to commit to a just cause that will damage others. Even though their opponents are truly guilty the probabilities remain that at some time these people will see them, again, in power. Apparently, the dread of that eventuality is great enough to stay their just hand.
Politics is the cutting edge which separates violence from discourse. Where there is fear, regardless of its rationale, it challenges the will to do good. Sufficient anger overcomes fear in the short term. How fearless are our well-spoken public servants? How angry are they? Do they actually even have sufficient means to influence the matter? We'll see.
Is the DOJ compromised? Sure, looks that way and even the suspicion of doubt is not good.

(11,179 posts)Germany 1928 - 1933 was not a consensus building, evidence based rise of a political movement...it was thuggery and violence used to maximum effect through fascists fighting communists in the streets and the Nazis rising to power with a minority of the popular vote until "suddenly" Hitler took over and installed his goons.
If the GOP wins control in November, just watch how fast the J6 committee is shoved into a drawer and the Hunter Biden show trial starts... You think they are going to hem and haw? You think they won't force Biden to testify?
The ugliness is known. The ability to stop it is what is slipping through our fingers...

What is and isnt viewed as justice depends on whether youre on offense or defense. Thats the problem, but thats where we are currently.

(2,587 posts)Has a long history of not holding people accountable, I should clarify. We have a long history of not holding our leaders, accountable for crimes. DT actually being charged would go against precedent. Nixon, Reagan, Bush Jr. all got a pass for crimes (Nixon actually got 2). These 3 are just in my lifetime.
If you think about it each one of those Presidents escalated the severity of their crimes. Nixons crime was a breaking and entering at the Watergate (setting aside the phones calls made to Vietnam during his campaign.) Reagans was arms selling in Iran-Contra. Bush Jrs was torture, lying us into a war in Iraq. I would argue each of those is worse then the previous one.
DT came along and the roof was blown off. Donald Trump lied about the deadly nature of COVID-19 because he wanted to play it down per Bob Woodward tapes
DT went on to do all he could to slow or stop the response to COVID-19 even calling it a hoax when thousands were dying every day. Trump was ultimately awarded the title of worst purveyor of COVID-19 misinformation. Over 1 million Americans have died from COVID-19. IMO this is the greatest crime any President has ever committed in the history of this country. Then on January 6th DT in front of the entire world attempted to overthrow our government, possibly the worst crime anyone could do but this was 10x worse because it was the President doing it.
IMO the loss of over a million humans is still DTs worst offense and possibly the reason he attempted the coup in the first place. Hard to think DT had positive thoughts of letting Dems see all his dirty laundry for the last 4 years.
I think this shows pretty clear that when people commit crimes and they are not held accountable they will try it again or someone watching from the sidelines will. Floridas current Governor is paying very close attention rt now
If DT and his minions are not held accountable then he will try this again. There was story last week that reported DT said openly that he will run in 2024 because getting back into the White House is the only way he can shield himself and his children from the law. That right there should DQ anyone from running for the office I feel.
