Former Daily Show host Jon Stewart on Thursday uncorked a profane rant for reporters in response to Senate Republicans blocking the passage of a bill to provide benefits to veterans who were exposed to burn pits overseas.
Although there is bipartisan support for the broad aims of the bill to give vets expanded health care benefits, Senate Republicans objected to language in a new version of the legislation that would reclassify some $400 billion in Veterans Administration funding as mandatory spending instead of discretionary spending.
Stewart, however, accused Republicans of making bad-faith objections to gum up the works and delay passage of the legislation.
"It's the exact same bill, they changed one sentence somehow!" Stewart fumed. "The sentence they changed was about using rural medical practices for the V.A., which apparently triggered a constitutional crisis and it had to be redone. That's all that changed!"

(82,849 posts)For those of you covering the Senate, you are perfectly capable of posing these questions to the Senators who changed their vote on this bill between February and now. Is it because they're all butthurt about getting snookered by Majority Leader Schumer and Sen. Manchin on the Inflation Reduction Act? If not that, then what caused them to change their vote and give ailing veterans the shaft?

(31 posts)I think the Democrats should send something resembling a nice Hallmark Card to every Republican who voted against this' constituents. When they open it, there is a insert that tells them that for some reason, their Senator decided to screw over the military men and women of this country and their families, but lie to them by saying that the Democrats were the guilty ones. It will explain how the Senator voted against the bill and why they did it. It'll say that if the Republicans are going to screw sick service members in this way, they could at least buy them dinner... or send them flowers... or at the very least get them a card like the one they just received.
The card should look very romantic by all appearances...On the outside of the card, it says in a very fancy font: "When I think of the things in my life that I hold most dear..."
Then when you open it, it reads, "Your health and well being fall well below my desire to 'Own the Libs'!
Is it so far below that I would let you die just to make the Democrats look stupid... That's kind of a ridiculous question... You bet I would!"
Signed,
Your a-hole Senator
Sure, it may cost a little more to send out nice Hallmark-like cards, but people will probably actually read it just because it's pretty.
