Senate Republicans celebrating after they blocked a bill which would've given better health benefits to veterans who suffer from the effects of open-air burn pits

JON STEWART: "They always have money for the war with no guardrails and no oversight, but all of a sudden they get religion on a healthcare bill for veterans," he continued. "And I'll say this, the most despicable part of this whole thing is watching on the Senate floor Ted Cruz fist-bumping and then patting each other on the back when they blocked this bill. Josh Hawley and Pat Toomey celebrating their victory over veterans with cancer."

(53,214 posts)when they're campaigning. Meanwhile, they are quick to vote for defense spending when military contractors benefit, but the actual soldiers often get left behind. They are such obvious hypocrites, yet they keep getting away with it.
people even want to go into the military when they are treated so horribly if they become ill from things like burn pits. I think I read my senators from my state voted against it.

(12,667 posts)It's Vets who join the GOPers' militias and Nazi parties in larger numbers then other groups, except maybe cops.
Most Vets usually vote for GOPers.
But now Vets know that when push comes to shove, no matter how Vets have helped GOPers win, they are going to be thrown under the bus to own the libs.
Sick, cancer ridden Vets are just tools for the GOP to get minor revenge.

(13,292 posts)My guess is that if TFG gets the GQP nomination he'll get a majority of the military vote. As a vet and a Democrat I am puzzled by this. The Repugs consistently vote against measures which would improve the lives of our veterans, and the Fat Tangerine is concerned only with things which puts taxpayer money directly in his pockets. Hell, he took millions of dollars earmarked for military schools and housing -- as well as aircraft and weapon systems --and redirected it to his f*cking wall.
Why do members of the military vote Republican? Is a puzzlement.

Senate passes historic bill to help veterans exposed to burn pits during military service
By Ali Zaslav and Jessica Dean, CNN
Updated 10:57 PM ET, Thu June 16, 2022
The Senate on Thursday passed historic legislation that would help millions of veterans who were exposed to toxic burn pits during their military service.
A wide bipartisan majority approved the long-awaited bill by a vote of 84-14. It will now go to the House of Representatives, where House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has pledged to move quickly and send it to President Joe Biden's desk for his signature. The bill is an amended version of the Honoring Our PACT Act that passed the House earlier this year.

The House made (reportedly) minor changes & sent it back to the Senate, where it was just voted down. What happened to the 84 Republicans who voted for it the first time???

(6,359 posts)Not sure what the cloture vote was, but it would have taken something like 25 Republicans to flip

(2,587 posts)They see this as a victory instead of what it really is. Republican congressmen celebrating denying American Veterans proper healthcare. GOP does not see the veterans as Americans who served and deserve our support and respect. They see them as a thing that they must defeat, not their own countrymen. Oh sure the gop and their single cell base are all kinds of patriotic when sending others to fight their fight but not when it comes to coming home.
A clear example of how nefarious, devious and conniving the GOP is
they went ballistic over the tragic loss of 4 Americans (3 were soldiers I believe) in Benghazi. Years of hearings, millions spent to investigate
nothing because it was the previous years of the GOP cutting Embassy Security funding which HRC had asked to be increased that caused this, HRC testified for 11 hrs. Now over 1 million Americans were killed by that same gop and the criminal negligence of that gop who did not hold 1 hearing on the response to the pandemic. Not 1 hearing in the PPE issue or the lying done by DT.
The GOP is the biggest threat we face.

(3,525 posts)I was at Al-Asad in 2005 when there was an active burn pit less than a mile from where I was working. I'm ok now, but I know damn well 20-30 years from now that might be a different story.
So fuck those Senators, I hope they die a slow painful death from either cancer or something cardiovascular.
