Yes, it's throwing dollar bills into a wishing well. But I wouldn't mind becoming an instant multimillionaire.

(9,019 posts)There is some interesting psychology behind these big jackpots. The odds of winning haven't increased, just the jackpot amount. The typical $100 million or so is still a pretty damn good return on that $2 investment. But for many, that just doesn't pique any interest. But a $1 billion return on that $2? Now we're talking!

He told me that if you must spend money for a ticket, it's important that you realize that you are paying for the excitement that you *MIGHT* beat the astronomically overwhelming odds.
You're buying the thrill.
He also recommended buying only one ticket. If one ticket represents a 1 in 13,000,000 chance at winning, then doubling your odds by purchasing two tickets still only gets you 2 chances in 13,000,000 at winning.
Everyone in the department calls lottery tickets a tax on people who are bad at math.

(2,238 posts)We buy one ticket when the jackpot is high enough that the daydream is worth $2.

(25,207 posts)Besides, I would never be able to pay the taxes, as this windfall would put me into a higher bracket.

(11,675 posts)I did buy for the last two drawings without luck, even though I specifically asked the store clerk for "three winning numbers". She failed me.
I'll just have to let someone else get lucky today.

(100,999 posts)Never played the lottery before so I had to show him how. There was nobody waiting while we were there.
I got a few yesterday, I always try to guess the #s even when I don't actually buy a ticket. I'd kick myself if I guessed the #s and didn't play for pot this big.
