A friend of mine passed out and fell head first onto the floor and suffered terrible injuries. As he lives alone what he remembers waking up on an ambulance gurney.
How did that happen? After he fell, his Apple Watch signaled him and asked he if had fallen. He didn't respond. The watch then called his daughter in another state to notify her. I was unclear if she called 911 or the watch did automatically, either way, incredible.
Without this he surely would have died.

(176 posts)I have an apple watch too. Was at a pro football playoff game last year. Everyone in the stands was screaming and clapping.
During a lull in the action I noticed my watch kept vibrating. I checked it and discovered it thought I had fallen and was on the verge of calling 911 for me!

(10,570 posts)Amazon prime day had a great deal on them ($279 if I remember correctly). Apple also has refurbished ones with full warranties for less: https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished/watch

On a similar but less dramatic turn of the same technology, I have to laugh at some of the gardeners at the community gardens where I supervise. They set up their Apple watches and iPhones so they can talk to their relatives while they weed their garden plots.
Now you might think this is kind of sad, but truth is a lot of these people are immigrants and this is their family time with people in their home country. Or at least that is what they tell me.

(789 posts)has asked me if I had fallen and needed help a half dozen times. In none of those cases had I fallen nor needed help, but what a wonderful life saving tool to have on my 78 year old wrist.

(10,421 posts)My 82-year-old aunt was in a car accident while she was driving through rural Pennsylvania with friends. They had gone up to see Longwood Gardens and were returning home to Maryland. Some kid who was on his phone t-boned them. My aunt's Apple Watch contacted her and alerted the police to within about 50 ft of the car's location. They were just getting out of the car when the cops arrived.
We keep trying to get my mother-in-law to get one, but she's tech-phobic.
