(10,865 posts)was that a very large percentage of the world seems to think that there is an existence after they die. That is denialism.
The reality of nuclear annihilation is something that no one can actually comprehend. Think of the suffering after a major catastrophe - no electricity, water, AC, starvation, medical access - until someone comes to the rescue.
To avoid extinction, we must take action to shift from an old mode of thinking which justifies war as necessary for survival to a new mode of thinking which recognizes war as the ultimate threat to survival.

(40,970 posts)& is in a "get while the gettin's still good" mode. Maybe we always have been. Agent Smith pretty much nailed it when he compared our species to a virus.
I think the clock needs to be updated to include climate change, maybe plague, too. Or have three separate clocks & make it a contest that world citizens can all bet onwhat will take out the most number of humans by 12/31/2099, nukes, climate change, or plague? Unfortunately it looks like we're going to take out a huge number of other species with us.

(6,675 posts)hundreds of diesel trucks driving all over the world. People ride cars, trucks, planes, boats all over just for 'fun'. And every thing has to be packaged in plastic, many times over in some cases. And we barely invest in solar, wind or any other usable power.

(3,000 posts)I'm kinda expecting it at some point. I like near an air force base so it'll be a quick flash of light and then vaporization. People are so stupid for having ever made so many of these things, honestly I wouldn't blame aliens for wiping us out sometimes.

(21,286 posts)The world is one misstep from devastating nuclear war and in peril not seen since the Cold War, the UN Secretary General has warned.

IMO too many autocratic strongmen without checks or balances on them who think they can get away with anything--possibly including the use of nukes to advance their power.
