(CNN)The Senate voted Tuesday night to pass a long-sought bipartisan legislation to expand health care benefits for millions of veterans exposed to toxic burn pits during their military service, sending the bill to President Joe Biden to sign into law. The final vote was 86-11.
Passage of the bill marks the end of a lengthy fight to get the legislation through Congress, as veterans and their advocates had been demonstrating on Capitol Hill for days. Many veterans were allowed into the Senate gallery to watch the final vote on Tuesday evening.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced after reaching the deal with Republicans who had blocked the bill from advancing last week while they sought to add cost-controlling amendment votes to the package.
"I have some good news, the minority leader and I have come to an agreement to vote on the PACT Act this evening," Schumer said on the Senate floor. "I'm very optimistic that this bill will pass so our veterans across America can breathe a sigh of relief.

Unbelievable the Republicans played games with this.
Actually, no. It's totally believable.

(26,257 posts)(the Area 51 location) will get some relief. They had a devil of a time w/ this location being that it was first totally denied as even existing. These word plays and stupid reasons do get rather tedious and ridiculous by republicans.
democratsruletheday
(1,880 posts)that HAMMER those bastards on this issue. They've tried to steal, submarine and Corrupt the VA for decades with the underlying premise of privatizing it. How ANY vet can vote for a Repuke is beyond the pale. I hope the Dems beat the drum on this issue every GD DAY until the midterms in early November. If they don't, then shame on them. This is gold and they need to use it. Can you IMAGINE if the Dems made this blunder? Like I said: USE it.

(26,257 posts)what I though, the undying love that republicans have for our military.
Now we really know what they think, that they think playing around and coming up w/ non-existent reasons to not vote this bill in (after it had a clear win lined up), to come up w/ some vague rationale etc. to excuse their down vote. Disgusting. Playing around w/ those who have put their lives in the front lines for us. What other excuse do you need?
Disgusting.
And thanks to Jon Stewart. He's been hot and heavy on Vet. rights, definitely supports the troops as most of us do. Some do not obviously, and we know who they are now.

(41,631 posts)Manchin made some kind of backhand deal on the CHIPs bill. Meanwhile the Repukes didn't know about Manchin and they agreed to vote for CHIPs. As soon as they heard that Manchin was going to pass the CHIPs bill, they threw a tantrum.
I guess this was the next bill up for a vote, so the Repukes refused to vote for it. Even though they had already approved it last spring. Somehow Jon Stewart got wind of what was happening, and he made it all very embarrassing for the Repukes. Stweart made them look very bad for renegging on the Vets benefits bill.
I think he handled this perfectly. He should be a Senator.

(26,257 posts)repugs are being slammed in this article by DU members.
A sampling (there are many many examples, I've only listed a few here):
Besides stopping the burn pit bill (it did after much backlash, finally pass), there was also this celebration by repugs after they stopped the bill. Really pathetic. U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) was caught on camera on the floor of the Senate fist-bumping his fellow GOP Senators after they successfully blocked legislation to help veterans who are suffering after being exposed to toxic burn pits.
A article posted by The Atlantic claims Trump repeatedly disparaged the intelligence of service members, asked that wounded veterans be kept out of military parades and called Military Troops Suckers and Losers.
Republicans Block Bills to Help Military Veterans

Watch the moment Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) tried to introduce a bill guaranteeing military pay and death benefits during the govt shutdown and GOP leader Mitch McConnell blocked it. etc.

I suspect that the below article is attempts by tRUMP and his thugs to infiltrate the military (remember the military telling tRUMP that they won't support any efforts to subvert the rule of law in earlier years).

Not One Single Republican Votes for Probe of Neo-Nazis in US Military

Jul 14, 2022 · Not One Single Republican Votes for Probe of Neo-Nazis in US Military and Police. Zero House Republicans supported a measure requiring the Pentagon and federal law
The Atlantics reports of Trump calling military dead in a cemetery in Europe suckers and losers.
...it looks like Trump has treated well-respected and highly visible military professionals poorly and shown them the door, often with accompanying insults. He has also accused senior military of being in bed with defense companies, saying the top people in the Pentagon probably arent [in love with me] because they want to do nothing but fight wars so that all of those wonderful companies that make the bombs and make the planes and make everything else stay happy. This is deeply insulting to everyone wearing a uniform.
If you want to find something positive or caring, I suggest that you do what I did, is do some research on your own, and find what you want on your own. You don't need someone else to do your work for you.
