DUer duhneece plea for support from a 'Ground Zero for Violence' County (updated at the bottom)

Last edited Sun Aug 7, 2022, 12:57 PM - Edit history (1)

First, an apology. It is our (Duer Stephanie DuBois and my) intention to post a plea for support for a combined campaign weekly through our own DU ActBlue site (gratitude to Omaha Steve is out of this world).

Our Trump supporting County is a powder keg for violence. Not just in a physical sense but ideologically and legislatively too. First, our County passed a ‘Sanctuary for the Unborn’, regardless of those in attendance voicing their objections. In the past physical attendance had "influenced" our commissioners over emails because emails couldn't be verified as local. However, when it is opposition that has greater physical presence as we have done recently, it's the emails in support that have greater weight, regardless of location, than those physically present to speak.

Immediately, on the county's coattails, the City of Alamogordo planned a special meeting that was advertised as an ‘event’ for a republican state rep candidate

to support the County AND pass their own ‘Sanctuary for the Unborn’ resolution. We spent a week mobilizing support to appear and speak at the ‘Special Meeting’. Once again, opposition to this resolution showed up in greater numbers to speak than those in favor.

Emails from those "against" were scrutinized and discarded as "probably" being from outside the area. The emails "for" were not equally challenged or tossed. The city passed the resolution regardless.

The youth in our community have really stepped up since the leaked draft of Roe V Wade was released. We have worked tirelessly as mentors to assist them in navigating the world of political activism. Learning from them as well, as they say, you're never too old to teach "old dogs" new tricks. Together we have organized several pro-choice rallies and voter registration drives.

Honestly we know we have our work cut out for us here but it's not impossible to flip Otero Blue. We must reach the youth who think their votes don't matter. Those who have lost faith in their party and don't bother showing up anymore. Even those who are ready to make a party switch. These people are out there but we need your help to reach them.

Please consider making a donation to our campaign so we can make a difference in Otero County, NM. Without your support nothing will ever change.

Donate here: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/dufordubois22

Thank you for your time and consideration.

I decided to add this photo, Cowboys for Trump Couy Griffin prayed at our protest against resolutions.

1. Way to work it, duhneece!

Here’s hoping some of those youths will replace some of those commissioners before long, to start running things fairly. Are any of the young folks that you’ve been mentoring able to assume some level of leadership role in mobilizing other youths?

5. Yes, one is super-amazing

22, mother of two, identifies LGBTQ+ has connected with national groups, our Democratic Party Chair and has used her connections so we created New Voices Otero with a Facebook page and other social media that’s a hub of local progressives, lgbtq+… but many ARE our future elected officials. They are just now imagining themselves in that role and, seeing that, gives me hope.

16. It'd be great if there was a social media hub for connecting folks like her nationally.

Sounds like you’re doing fantastic work!

PS, totally off topic, but have people told you that you have a Reese Witherspoon smile?

8. Thank you duhneece

We need all the support we can get down here in Otero. The resolution passed by the county is the district 2 commissioner, Couy Griffin's, lame duck attempt to keep himself in the news. The resolution passed by the city was a political stunt to promote the GOP candidate for district 51 and as a precursor to 3 of the city commission members reelections early in 2023.
We need to stop this wasteful spending of tax payer dollars for these meetings that the public has consistently participated in against the resolutions. As a county commissioner I will be able to do this at the county level. Sharonlee Cummins will be able to make sure her opponent doesn't keep trying to block healthcare at the state level.
I was proud to attend the city meeting and participate in the rally on Saturday, and even got to give Couy Griffin a piece of my mind face to face, and I look forward to fighting against the oppression with our younger generation.

9. Good news!

"The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Mexico today sent letters to the Alamogordo City Commission and the Otero County Commission reiterating that resolutions opposing the provision of abortion care have no force of law in our state. The letters were sent in response to a recently-passed resolution in Otero County and pending resolutions placed on the agenda tonight by the Alamogordo City Commission seeking to denounce and potentially restrict legal access to abortion care.

Despite the harmful U.S. Supreme Court Dobbs decision stripping away the nearly 50-year-old constitutional right to abortion care at the federal level, abortion remains safe and legal in New Mexico.

Any attempts to enforce these resolutions would be in violation of the New Mexico constitution as well as state law, and any attempts to enforce any anti-abortion resolution or passage of an ordinance restricting the fundamental reproductive rights of New Mexicans would be immediately challenged in court by the ACLU of New Mexico...These resolutions are unenforceable and spread confusion about access to abortion for those seeking quality reproductive health care in our state. Not to mention they are a waste of taxpayer resources in communities that already lack access to healthcare. To be clear: Any attempts to enforce these resolutions would violate New Mexico’s constitution and state law. The ACLU of New Mexico stands ready to defend New Mexicans’ right to abortion and all reproductive health care in every corner of our state.”

10. I'll watch for the e-mail from Omaha Steve. I gave to your campaign. It's so important...

... for Democrats to stay vocal in red areas. Only then can they attract other Dems and maybe, one day, achieve a critical mass. And everyone needs to keep hearing the right things!!! THANK YOU!!!

11. Thank you...that 'critical mass' you spoke of is happening -

For certain, at least in my mind's eye, I AM seeing that our hanging in there, speaking up, running for office is paying off. And we have done that with support from my DU family...and inspiration to run, first put in my head by Omaha Steve.

We are seeing younger people attend, get involved...but news on this month's county agenda is putting me back in fetal position as our County doubles down on Gideon/fascist new rules, privatizing management of our jail, more...but that's for next week.
