The secret history of the U.S. governments family-separation policy

As a therapist for children who are being processed through the American immigration system, Cynthia Quintana has a routine that she repeats each time she meets a new patient in her office in Grand Rapids, Michigan: She calls the parents or closest relatives to let them know the child is safe and well cared for, and provides 24-hour contact information.
This process usually plays out within hours of when the children arrive. Most are teens who have memorized or written down their relatives phone numbers in notebooks they carried with them across the border. By the time of that initial call, their families are typically worried, waiting anxiously for news after havingin an act of desperationsent their children into another country alone in pursuit of safety and the hope of a future.
But in the summer of 2017, Quintana encountered a curious case. A 3-year-old Guatemalan boy with a toothy smile and bowl-cut black hair sat down at her desk. He was far too little to have made the journey on his own. He had no phone numbers with him, and when she asked where he was headed or whom hed been with, the boy stared back blankly. Quintana scoured his file for more information but found nothing. She asked for help from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer, who came back several days later with something unusual: information indicating that the boys father was in federal custody.
At their next session, the boy squirmed in his chair as Quintana dialed the detention center, getting his father on the line. At first the dad was quiet, she told me. Finally we said, Your child is here. He can hear you. You can speak now. And you could just tell that his voice was breakinghe couldnt.

(3,265 posts)That the Christofascists are ducking evil. There is no need to be that evil. How dangerous is a three-year old anyway?

Trump ramps up rhetoric on undocumented immigrants: 'These aren't people. These are animals.'

(130,436 posts)and posted it yesterday in the editorials and other articles forum, which I don't think anybody looks at. https://www.democraticunderground.com/1016328703 You really have to read this - we thought it was horrifying at the time, but it was even worse than we thought. They didn't just lose the children; they wanted to take them away. Some people tried to prevent it but were either unable to get through the bureaucracy or were too chickenshit to stand up to TFG and Steven Miller; others, including some people we hadn't even heard of, wanted to do it and set out to do it from the very beginning.
The extent of the evil of the Trump administration is being revealed more and more, and it's as clear as gin that if any of these monsters achieve power again we are well and truly fucked.

I think they were planning to sell them, quite frankly.
This is another facet of what could amount to the biggest RICO case ever.
Those assholes need to burn on earth before they get to burn in hell.

(24,718 posts)Similarly, the current trend of white fake Christians on social media who say "we'll adopt your baby" to pregnant women will either sell the kids or traffic them. These people know no bottom.

(13,460 posts)will be adopted is a lot of distraction and lies. Here are the numbers of children in foster care from 2020:
Published by Statista Research Department, Feb 9, 2022
In 2020, there were 175,870 white children in foster care in the United States. This is compared to 92,237 Black or African American children and 88,111 Hispanic children who were in foster care.
I saw another statistic recently that only 2% of families in this country adopt, and while some do take children from another race many will not. Nor will they sign up for those who are physically or mentally challenged. Obviously, perfect white babies will be adopted first. The white evangelicals just dont talk about all the others left to wither in foster care, much of which is abysmal in the US. I wish the media would challenge some of the people claiming that all these babies will be adopted with these statistics and ask them why these children have not been adopted. I wont hold my breath waiting for that to happen.

(31,300 posts)but thank you for posting. I have shared and signed up for the ZOOM on the 12th.
It shames me as an American that this atrocious policy was even considered let alone enacted. It is a Crime Against Humanity. Will there be consequences, ever?

(6,670 posts)there was a show about Latino voters. Many are turning to vote puke*. One woman interviewed said that the republican party "better aligns with her Christian values." I wish the interviewer had brought up the separated children and babies and asked her how that registers on her scale of Christian virtue.
*the reasoon is probably the rise of RW talk radio in Spanish. The 666koch(s)666 know what they're doing.
