General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe FBI called the Secret Service at Mar-a-Lago hours ahead of the search warrant...
...and Trump's lawyers were there to oversee the search?
Is that true?
I saw that reported on one of the morning shows but I cannot recall which show?
So Trump knew about the "raid" before it happened?
Did they have time to remove or get rid of any of the evidence before the search?
Is that common procedure by the FBI to notify the target ahead of time?
Also, it was reported that the DOJ lawyers went to Mar-a-Lago in June to negotiate the release of the documents and have had no success. And this left them no choice but to execute the search warrant?
So, it appears there were documents there and the FBI went in and confiscated them?

Yet.
Maybe we will get some facts later?

(5,905 posts)A Lot of white collar criminals have time to notify lawyers. Searches take time, more than enough time for lawyers to show up and advise the searchee to shut up and not interfere during the search.
At any rate, I heard "documents were seized," so they found something of interest.

(111,111 posts)It seemed to be a stand-off between Trump and the DOJ and Trump did not think Garland had the cajones to act, in my opinion.

And/or he hides evidence of his criming in his safe there, and that's why they focused on the safe.
I hope he's sweating bullets.

(111,111 posts)And he had them hid in his basement and the FBI wanted him to secure them with a padlock in their previous visit.
Why shouldn't he think he could get away with anything with that type of treatment?

He would keep something that would exonerate him.
Or prove damaging to his enemies.
Or something he could sell or use for blackmail.

One former DoJ prosecutor explained that the search aspect of the warrant is typically to enable swift action to avoid giving time to remove/destroy evidence, while a subpoena would merely require someone to present himself at some agreed upon time.

(21,641 posts)DOJ bent over backwards to ask Trump to return the documents. They had no choice but to get a warrant to get the documents back.
Here is an awful thought, will DOJ charge Trump with a crime, or is DOJ satisfied it got the documents back?

if this is done to simply retrieve the secret documents. We will get some BS thing about the documents being "declassified" because TFG said so and other stuff.
If they can find a "transfer" of the document to some foreign entity (selling of secrets to foreign countries/treason), then I would think they would seek a harsh and real punishment for TFG.
Irish_Dem
(48,880 posts)And Trump could claim he unclassified them so he is not guilty.
So we never hear the truth.
Claustrum
(4,846 posts)because of the leeway that were given to TFG. If I have taken a secret document, let alone boxes of them, both I and the documents would have been seized and taken into custody within a few days. TFG kept them for over 2.5 years and the government agencies and the courts bent over backwards to try to ask TFG nicely to return them.
Once again, unless they have proof that he sold the secrets to foreign countries, I doubt there will be much of a punishment for him.

(48,880 posts)We are constantly told the latest stunt is a game changer and BFD.
And then it fizzles into nothing territory.
I am in the "don't wake me up until the orange F-Wad is in jail" category.
We know the GOP elite, the power and money connected, are all above the law.
Claustrum
(4,846 posts)But we are dealing with an ex-president who has a team of secret service agents protecting him and his home. The notification and coordination is unfortunately needed. It would be horrific to have a stand off between the secret service team and the FBI.

(19,416 posts)More like a planned turning over of materials to the FBI.
I think Trump wanted to spin it that he is the victim, but it sounds like his lawyers and security knew it was coming before hand.
...and now, he is looking to take political advantage of his crime.

(7,894 posts)not a complete surprise...luxury cars, SUVs, motorcycles in and all day/all night..I was outside when black cars started pulling up to the house...they blocked the driveway, parked next to and in front of the Maserati's/Maybach's/Mercedes, Porsches/BMWs, and chained the three Ducati's together..within minutes the street was blocked and agents got out of their cars, papers in hand, and a call was made to the occupants who then were escorted outside..from what I witnessed, my neighbors were given very little notice before agents/US Marshall Service knocked and entered..
I suspect the FBI personnel and lawyers were given a heads up minutes before, not hours before the search and seize ..
kentuck
(111,111 posts)I may be wrong on that.
I hope it was only minutes but I have my doubts about that.

(7,286 posts)It specified what was there and where it was at the time the warrant was executed
They had to prove to a judge exactly what was there and exactly where it was and they had to know it was still there
Prove as in proof
..like eyewitness or photograph proof. Sounds like they had a mole to me
If it was locked in safe the warrant would specify such
If anyone were to disturb the items listed on the warrant, they would go to jail
Especially if they were classified documents
Maybe they should have waited until Trump was there, they might have caught him flushing them
But this way they preserved the evidence
Irish_Dem
(48,880 posts)The judge had to have some proof before he signed off on the warrant.
And the warrant had to state what the FBI was looking for.
Yes it could have been eye witness, pictures or wire/phone tap.
