In the slow-mo, you can see the plane angle toward that opening just before impact. Hermit-The-Prog Aug 2022 #15

A lot of fuel got split and exploded, but the pilot seems to have kept his/her shit together through the impact.

Dropped into what looked to be the only spot big enough for the plane to come down.
That veer to the right after impact was really lucky, since no vehicles were close in the right lane.
Pretty amazing.

Capt. Sullenberger not only managed to water-land Flight 1549 intact, but it was smack in the middle of a box bounded by 3 NY Waterway ferry terminals and the Circle Line terminal. Right at a time where they were gearing up for rush hour.

It was practically the perfect place for a lot of boats to drop what they were doing and quickly go help.

Yeah, that finishing skid across traffic without hitting anything was sheer luck.
