Garland didn't have to say anything. Stoney silence conveys impartiality. The TFG can blather on and BS all he likes. No serious person takes him seriously. Garland coming out to defend the FBI will not impress those who are attacking them.
Publicly stating he is trying to get the warrant unsealed makes it seem he's taking sides, trying to show Trump up. He should have no more or less interest in getting it unsealed in this case than in any other. He shouldn't care what people claim or think. Let the pundits have it out.

(7,715 posts)You are fine with Trump's blathering on about the search, but want the DoJ/FBI to be silent? You do understand that filing documents under seal is generally an exception, not the norm?
When the other party puts the search in the public forum, it's basically a no-brainer for the DoJ/FBI to counter that, "stoney [sic] silence" or otherwise.

(15,460 posts)If TFG really wanted people to know what was on the warrents, he would have released his copy already.
This just shut him up and stopped a lot of the shit-pot-stirring his fellow travellers are doing.

(31,373 posts)To have Jan 6 type rage boiling up and over, and that is of course, what Trump is trying to accomplish.
What Garland did (hopefully) thwarts this. He looks accommodating, like he wants to clear up confusion over the raid's legitimacy. And if Trump blocks the document release tomorrow, he looks like he is hiding something.
We had a MAGA January 6th freak attempt to breach the FBI building in Cincinnati and you don't think it important that he provide information that explains their actions as it pertains to trump's alleged criminality? He understands all too well what this country is dealing with. Murderers, insurrectionists and traitors.

(35,088 posts)it seems the only time law enforcement is the most amped up is when they're defending their own or responding to the GOP's demands. Our demands are pretty much ignored. Other than that, I think AGG checkmated tfg. Kudos to him.

(1,654 posts)He wasn't trying to show Trump up. He was doing a verbal jujitsu move. Calmly announcing what was done and taking complete responsibility for it (when did anyone in TFG's administration do that?) and telling him "It's your move."

(13,850 posts)I think that the Right Wing was clamoring for the warrant to be unsealed. He offered them what they want. He called their bluff.
I think he also looks more impartial for it. Opening it up so people can see what it's all about so that they can stop making up stories.

(11,767 posts)Garland is not trying to convince the people who are attacking him. As I said in a thread I started, the people attacking Garland (Trump and supporters) are NOT operating in good faith. They are doing what people often do with government agencies that are typically bound to respect confidentiality. They can attack and smear agencies and the agency cannot really do much to defend itself because sharing information would violate privacy, or put investigations at risk, etc...
As Garland said, DOJ does it's "talking" with legal actions in court. The problem with that is we have an insanely corrupt former politician who has a whole media system backing him, and an entire political party willing to further his corrupt aims Trump and the GOP have been successful at framing the narrative. Garland requesting the unseal the warrant puts Trump in a position where he either has to OBJECT to what he specifically was asking for and complaining about, and look like a complete hypocrite to all but his brain dead followers; OR the warrant is unsealed and everyone interested finds out the process by which the DOJ had their suspicions and what they were looking for. Either way, they will find NO political motivations for the search, simply a boring process. They ONLY way Trump keeps his charade going is if he objects, then continues to whine about "lack of transparency", then it is up to the Democratic Party to shout him down and point out to everyone listening that transparency was his for the asking but he BLOCKED it.
The thing about this situation should actually be that it doesn't matter if this was a Democratic or Republican politician doing this, the process would be the SAME. Thing is, Democratic politicians do not lie, steal stuff, and stonewall like Republicans do. We believe in the law and try to follow it as best we can. That is the difference. This is typically UNNECESSARY with Democrats.

(16,465 posts)Trump created this spectacle with his demands that the warrant be released, with his followers amplifying that. The thing is trump could have released his copy at any time. Instead, he chose to drum up his cult to make death threats to the judge and attack the FBI.
He backed trump's ass into a corner. Trump never thought that he would release the warrant, so he could use that as an attack point on the FBI, DOJ and judges. trump is on record as demanding the release of the warrant, of which he could have released it at any time. Trump now has a choice, fight the release in court or let the DOJ release it. News reports are also pointing out trump has a copy he can release, why didn't he?
trump and his "crack" team of lawyers are woefully unprepared.
