A lot of here were all Garland isnt doing anything about Trump. President Biden needs to get rid of him and get someone in there who will.
Then
out of the blue
AG Garland drops a 500-pound anvil on Trumps overpainted head.
Garland is running the tightest-lipped Justice Department in recent history. Garland is no joke; hes the prosecutor who put The Unabomber in ADX Florence and who put a needle in Timothy McVeighs arm. He is exactly who we needed right now.

(47,940 posts)I'm not perfect in this regard, either. I didn't think nothing was going on, but as time went on, I was afraid he wasn't taking this as seriously as he could. As many have said here, "if you go for the king, you'd better get him the first time," or something like that. Garland has surpassed my expectations, and less than 3 months before the midterms, too.
With more J6 hearings coming next month. I may die of overload of joy.

That needs to be reframed - it wasn't a lack of action out of DOJ, it was a lack of leaks.

(25,703 posts)First, I had faith (and still do) in Biden's determination to preserve our democracy and see justice done regarding Trump. Therefore, I trusted Biden's judgment in appointing Garland as AG.
Second, I looked up Garland's history, his past service as a prosecutor and lifelong service to Democratic members of Congress and his appointments in Democratic administrations. I knew that accusations about him being a Federalist were not true.
Third, I remember how long the Watergate investigation took. I remember that, immediately after the initial news report, nothing more was said about the break in for several months. It didn't break out into the open until the Congressional hearings, 2 years after the break in.
Fourth, I know from real life news reports and from fictitious TV, movie, and book stories about crimes that detectives and AG investigations do not reveal their information as they go along and for very good reasons. They do not want to tip off their suspects and the suspects' allies in advance of what they are doing. They do not want to give them a chance to hide evidence, fabricate excuses, go into hiding, etc. So I never bought into claims that the public has a right to know the details of an investigation. That claim is nonsense. We have a right to some transparency AFTER the investigations, when a suspect has been formally accused and charged. But we do not have a right to know the names of any informants for the protection of the informants and of the system. How many informants would come forward if they knew that their names would be made public and expose them to death threats?
I hope that current awareness of Garland's dedication and tight investigation makes us think more sensibly in the future about what goes on in investigations, justifiably without our knowledge.

(53,061 posts)Not just Garland but all Federal Prosecutors are quick to sopeana/search warrant and slow to indict and prosecute.
Almost by definition they will prolong actual prosecution if more evidence is possible.
With conviction rates in the high 90s FP don't want to start trials until they have passed both preponderance of evidence and beyond a reasonable doubt to "fucking caught him with his hand in the safe with video, pictures, DNA, fingerprints, and confessions.
They will move quickly to get evidence but may not move on prosecution unless it's a slam dunk.

. . .when it comes to leaking information.
For starters, Biden (and, we presume, Garland) don't pit various parties against each other, don't play that sort of shit for sport. They're not in DC for power plays, they're there to preside over the people's business re governing and justice.

(31,959 posts)one of the charges against Trump that is inferred was that he was destroying evidence, was destroying documents, most likely coming from a whistleblower. Time was of the essence to act, and to Garland's credit he acted.

(10,897 posts)But I've been getting fidgety - worried they'll run out the clock.
I do not have the expectation that they'll put Trump behind bars - even though it is long overdue.
I feel Trump is just media fodder for DeSantis
A hope I have if they can pin enough on Trump and his enablers that it will help tip the election scales like it did when Nixon went down - particularly if Trump skips. Hopefully, there will be enough of a legitimate election process for that to happen (ie that the Republicans don't hijack it with all the crap they're doing at the state level).

(6,986 posts)over his decision to stonewall Obama's legitimate appointment and put Garland on the SCOTUS.
I will admit to having doubts, but also being taciturn. But I am committed to support Democrats in this administration which appears to be patiently, quietly and effectively doing the right thing.
The fact of the matter is that Trump is now poison, and the 2022 election is rapidly turning into a referendum on his monumental corruption. In spite of the rhetoric of surprise around Trump having to find out that the rule of law applies to him and America is not an autocracy, most Republicans wish he would go away. No Republican wants to be put in the position of having to defend why Donald Trump broke a law for which he specifically increased the penalty, and why they are defending his possession of any document he had on the premises. That is an untenable position and they know it.
Ignorance is the biggest enemy of American democracy, and it runs rampant now. But the turn this is taking, along with January 6th, and the reaction to the radicalism of the supreme court is all good news for Democrats, in spite of this being the midterm after an election when the party in power traditionally loses seats. I'm tired of hearing that and I'm looking forward to this being the first major exception to that in a long, long time.

(3,946 posts)that the AG was keeping mum about charges that would end 45 forever. I knew that orange man was perfectly capable of stealing or selling national security secrets but had no idea he was actually doing it in real time.
Garland knew though.
He's a ninja. His polite calm demeanor belies a steely determination. He's the toughest AG I can remember in my life time.

(59,329 posts)If it is not, what all this actually shows is that we have REALLY big problems in the DOJ, the FBI, and every other department that has anything to do with our national security.
Right now, we are missing big pieces of this story.
So once again, I will say what I have said all along. We will know when we know, and I'll believe that tfg will be prosecuted when I see tfg prosecuted.
To that I'll add, I really hope this was a sting operation, because if it isn't our espionage people and our allies' espionage people are in grave danger, if they aren't already dead.
sheshe2
(97,129 posts)I judged him by his history of accomplishments:
Merrick Garland's 'flawless' work in Oklahoma City crucial in white supremacy fight
It reads like an entry on a message board popular with the insurrectionists who broke into the US Capitol on 6 January expressing a sentiment at once shocking and shockingly routine in 2021 America.
But the words are from 1992 America, written in a letter to a newspaper by Timothy McVeigh, who three years later would carry out the Oklahoma City bombing, the deadliest incident of domestic terrorism in US history. An anti-government, white supremacist army veteran, McVeigh set off a truck bomb underneath a day care facility in a federal building, killing 168 people including 19 children.
The attack spawned the largest criminal case in US history. With conspiracy theories threatening the public trust even in those relatively innocent times for the truth, and the contemporaneous murder trial of OJ Simpson having fed widespread disillusionment with the American justice system, federal prosecutors knew that they would be working under a microscope.
But the lead prosecutor dispatched by Washington to Oklahoma a day after the bombing, Merrick Garland, demonstrated a particularly honed sense for what the investigation required and how to deliver it, according to former colleagues.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/feb/01/merrick-garland-oklahoma-city-timothy-mcveigh-attorney-general
The calm quiet manner he has shown. Also the faith Obama put in him and McConnell's hatred of him were tipping points for me.
Yes, it is a sting operation far larger and more complicated than Oklahoma ever was. We have heard there were payroll documents for our espionage people, they most likely have already been outed, perhaps dead. We don't know, may never know, as they were under deep cover. Our national security secrets, most likely have already been bought and pain for.
Every door the DOJ opens, a hundred more trump traitors fall out. Frankly I don't see this tied up before the election, it is incredibly complex and the players intertwined. The evil is in our house and senate, it is from the top down and they all need to pay the price for their treachery.

(97,129 posts)Question for you while you are here.
Kinda OT
IF tfg goes to trial for these charges, I assume it is Federal Court. So a jury of his peers? How do they find a jury and alternates that know nothing about tfg. How do they weed out trumpers? Is it possible for them to find a fair and balanced jury?
Frankly I think he should be tried at the Hague for crimes against humanity. His crimes are here primarily yet have benefited our enemies around the world, not in a good way.

(59,329 posts)presence of the documents at MOL is part of a DOJ sting against tfg. I am saying I hope they knew all along the papers were there and wanted to see what he was going to do with them, but they were always in control of the documents. Or the documents were somehow fakes.
We have no idea yet if it was a sting operation. There has been no information to say it was, and frankly it seems unlikely to me that it was. But it is the only scenario that does not point to a complete failure of our national security apparatus, so I fervently hope that we learn soon that it was a sting.
If we learn that it was NOT a sting operation by the DOJ against tfg, it means that our most damaging national secrets have been unsecured in a hotel basement for 18 months.
If that is the case, this is not a good thing. This is not a success on anyone's part. It represents an astonishing failure by every organization charged with our national security, including the FBI and the DOJ.

(178,594 posts)This is a difficult situation in that Garland is having to rebuild the DOJ. I remember the problems that AG Holder and Deputy AG Tom Perez had rebuilding the DOJ civil rights section after 8 years of W's efforts to destroy this section. Assholes like Christian Adams who was the idiot who pushed the "New Black Panther" silliness. Adams was from a third-tier law school and could never have been hired by the DOJ in normal circumstances.
Link to tweet
Christian Adams was a member of TFG's bogus voter fraud panel that found no voter fraud and is still defending voting suppression groups like True the Vote.
Garland has had to clean up the DOJ and get good people in like Gupta. I have confidence in AG Garland and I am not surprised at the actions taken this week
I also like the actions taken by the DOJ with regards to the recent civil rights prosecutions. Garland is a good man and is going a good job at the DOJ
