(94,129 posts)Shortly before Mr. Garland made the announcement, a person close to Mr. Trump reached out to a Justice Department official to pass along a message from the former president to the attorney general. Mr. Trump wanted Mr. Garland to know he had been checking in with people around the country and found them to be enraged by the search.
The country is on fire, Mr. Trump said, according to a person familiar with the exchange. What can I do to reduce the heat?
The following day, as a judge unsealed the warrant and the inventory of items that the F.B.I. took, Mr. Trump alternately claimed he did nothing wrong and also made the baseless statement that officials may have planted evidence on him.

(22,590 posts)Also, did the lawyer 1) knowingly lie when they signed that statement, or 2) take Trumps word that all the classified documents had been returned and sign off accordingly?
The first would be heinously criminal on both the lawyer's part and Trump's. The second would be heinously criminal on Trump's part and heinously stupid on the part of the lawyer. Either way, the optics for the lawyer are pretty horrible!
I can't help but wonder how many legal careers have been damaged or destroyed by getting mixed up with Trump, and how many more will be before it's all said and done.

(26,257 posts)viewing the evidence, checking it out one for one against the criteria if any, before we then put our official stamp of approval (as auditors do) and this signing of the statement by trump attorney(s) w/o viewing first the physical evidence (not just taking tRUMP at his word) is a career ender if you ask me.
You're right, that the lawyer(s) are both criminal and / or incredibly stupid, especially if they see what happened to other lawyers that got caught lying, doing unethical things who lost their certification, and other types of reprimands (Ghoul, Sidney P., Jay S., many others).
I like your advice about being a trump lawyer.
What I can't figure out is how stupid does one have to be to be associated w/ the likes of a chronic liar like the FORMER president (as Pres. Biden would put it)? Anything that comes out of MAL or trump-related is NOT to be trusted, period obviously.

(26,168 posts)That would be a bad thing, given the nature of those documents.

(26,016 posts)it's time for a grand jury indictment of Trump and his accomplices for obstruction of justice and for having classified documents in Trump's Florida home.
Clear cut, understandable to the general public and to a jury for a trial. Convict the traitors on this and continue to collect evidence for additional charges.

(130,538 posts)as often as he breathes. All lawyers know that sometimes their clients lie to them and any lawyer who worked for TFG should have been certain that was happening. A smart one would have added the caveat on information and belief, but TFG doesnt hire the smart ones. The smart ones know that he always lies and he doesnt pay.
I am speculating that the retention of the remaining items despite the subpoena was because TFG didnt want them to know hed taken the TS-SCI nuke stuff in the first place.

(130,538 posts)TFG, being a right moron, had his minions pack up everything they could find regardless whether it was stamped Top Secret, figuring it would be valuable in some way, and not caring that he wasnt entitled to take it. When the Feds told him it was illegal to possess that stuff for any reason he hid it instead of complying with the subpoena. That certainly sounds like something he would have done.

(26,016 posts)after they were requested, he had to have one of his MAGA allies appointed to the security detail that handles those documents. There's other way since protocol forchaon or history required the documents to be returned and lockedup by a security person after they have been viewed by someone.
So, the DOJ invrstigstion will probably.look at who was assigned to security for the documents while the docs were in the WH.

Maybe he thought he could create a "shadow presidency" at MAL?
I know he created his office at MAL...(As all former presidents do )
However, Trump also created his office with intention of running a campaign, which other presidents don't do.
He mixes campaign with official business all the time.

(62,536 posts)They knew what documents he had because they keep a trail of possession for the top secret stuff. If X goes missing and Y was last with it then Y has it or needs to be questioned about it. Trump for sure lied to his lawyer but his mere possession of it, because of how the chain of custody works, means he had to know he was in possession of it. It's not like oh wow his maids are going to take a big box of classied top secret materials and just walk with it. That's not how it works that's not how any of this works.

(1,188 posts)Documents in Trumps itty bitty hands. How he got them out of the White House is disturbing though. Youd think they would have protocol for collecting those items on a daily, if not hourly basis.
wnylib
(26,016 posts)these highly restricted documents. The only way that Trump could have got them out of the WH is if he had appointed one of his MAGA allies to a position in the chain of custody.
wnylib
(26,016 posts)For some reason, people are overlooking this chain of custody regarding SCI documents.
Because of the chain of custody established for these highly restricted documents, it is IMPOSSOBLE for Trump to not know what he had.
triron
(22,240 posts)wnylib
(26,016 posts)In order to have SCI documents, he (his allies) had to request specific documents from the handlers who control the locked documents. It is not possible to not know what they had, given the necessity to specifically request them in order to get them.

(16,254 posts)It's the problem with lies. If you pile up the lies, it's hard to remember what they were or who to point to.
I've never been able to understand how Trump found the biggest liars in the country as lawyers, staff members and supporters. Just think of how many have been caught lying, guilty of fraud, sexual crimes, voting violations and gawd only knows what else.
He just has a knack for drawing these types in.
