New Yorks chaotic primary elections for Congress, which will be held on Aug. 23, are the outcome of Democrats in Albany having tried to do an end run around the state Constitutions ban on partisan gerrymandering. The courts smacked them down for that, and a hurried and confusing race to represent 20 million New Yorkers is now the result.
The races are important because they could help determine whether Democrats or Republicans win control of the House in November.
The new congressional map reconfigured the district lines in New York City and its suburbs, some of which have been in place for decades. Some of the districts, like the 10th, include parts of several previous districts. In the 17th, elected officials found that their homes no longer were within the districts they represented. So they had to either move or switch to new districts. In the 12th, the district was consolidated with another, leading to an intensely competitive primary.
More competition is good in politics, and the shapes of some of the new districts are more rational than before. But candidates were given little time to learn districts and voters to learn candidates.
The editorial boards choices for the best candidates to represent these districts are Dan Goldman, Jerrold Nadler and Sean Maloney.

(54,370 posts)He is Judiciary Committee chairman, knows his stuff cold, and was a major voice decrying Bill Clintons impeachment by Henry Hyde and Newt Gingrich. Jerry is exactly what Republicans hate most: a smart, experienced, New York liberal Jewish man, who can usually run rings around anyone the Republicans throw at him.
Now I realize that in recent years, it has become fashionable to primary Democratic House members with just those qualifications, just because we can, but in Jerrys case, it would be really, REALLY stupid.
When I lived back in Manhattan he was my Representitive at certain times. 👍

(94,527 posts)Consider that the Impeachment of Trump was handed to Adam Schiff; Nadler's management of Judiciary was never stellar.
If I was in NY-12, I'd probably vote for Suraj Patel.
My wife and I (and various friends) will be voting for Carlina Rivera in NY-10.

(54,370 posts)I've known Jerry for over ten years, spoke to him twice this past week.
He has been occupied with his wife's advanced cancer, but the latest round of treatment seems to be working, and on the phone, he seemed to be anything but "past his prime." Maybe you have gotten a different impression in your conversations with him. I can rely only on my own.

(13,493 posts)bc that's my district and those are the candidates I'm most familiar with. Goldman is interesting to me. I think he's whip smart, but my BIGGEST worry about him is also his biggest strength. (He has experience as a prosecutor which may be needed right now in fighting anti-democratic forces, but I don't know where his experience to focus on the specific needs of NY 10 will come from. And I worry how that will affect us.)
Mondaire Jones has been a good legislator, but he's district shopping.
I LOVE Jo Ann Simon as an assembly woman, and her favorite restaurant is one of mine. lol. She has her finger on the pulse of the needs of my specific community, but NY 10 is more than my specific community, and I'm not sure she has the experience to go further.
The other three candidates major candidates, I'm not as familiar with Yuh Line Niou, Elizabeth Holtzman or Carolina Rivera. I read their interviews with the NY Times, and I'm leaning toward the first three. The NY Times Endorsement for Goldman actually surprises me after reading his interview. They challenged him more than some of the others. He droned on more than some of the others. But I also feel like he has a certain set of skills that MAY meet the moment.

(94,527 posts)...a former Congresswoman from 40 years ago. Rivera is a mainstream progressive on the NYC Council from the Lower East Side.
Simon is my Assemblywoman, but I'm not convinced she's ready to step up to national politics. Goldman is ALL national politics (no idea what his opinions are on local issues). Jones isn't bad, but as you point out, he's not really a New Yorker.

(13,493 posts)though not quite sure. It's not on our sample ballot, at least. (The district lines for representative, state senator and assembly person continue to confuse me, as does this second primary!)

(37,449 posts)see the 18th and the 19th Districts, there is a election to fill the time left on Degaldo's term when he was appointed Lt. Gov and then a general election , the boundaries will change the 19th. There are people running not on the ballot and then those that are....
I'm find with anyone beating the Republican worm in the 18th presumably Ryan the Ulster Co. Executive .
