Did you watch the video? According to that, she's been arrested 2 or 3 times, so the police have not been reacting as you described.

It sounds like the property management is working on litigation to get her evicted from the apartment complex where she and the man she's harassing live. Some places she would have been evicted already, but the laws are different everywhere and it can be a long, drawn out process in some localities. I hope it doesn't take too much longer.

I believe the correct medical terminology is "crazier than a shithouse rat."

Thanks to Reagan and a misguided gaggle of civil libertarian lawyers, state mental health care was gutted and there is no longer any mechanism to pick her up and take her in for a serious evaluation. If she has any family, even they can't take her in if she doesn't want to go, even if they find a place to take her.

So they'll eventually evict her, she will be on the street, and she will be everybody's problem and there will still be no solution for her or for the people she terrifies.

If they found her bleeding in the street, they'd bring her in and treat her. Since the organ that has failed is the one between their ears, it is treated as a moral issue and she's treated as though she's capable of making a rational choice over treatment. She is not capable of that.

society did not follow up with outpatient mental health care, which could have prevented some cases from getying worse and dangerous.

In some areas, like mine, local hospitals have a psychiatric unit where people whose behavior is a threat to themselves and/or to others can be taken for observation and confinement for a limited time, usually up to a month. That is a temporary solution, though. There are still a few facilities around for long term confinement of people whose illness is socially dangerous, but confinement to them is difficult.

It's a rock and a hard place situation. In the past, it was too easy to confine people and abuse their civil rights. Now it is too difficult when it is necessary.

25. Danger to self or others has been too narrowly defined

and generally means somebody has to be standing there with an actual or potential weapon to be considered dangerous. Case in point, some of my own family who have had manic episodes that have ended their employment, destroyed their finances, and rendered them homeless but have not somehow constituted a danger to themselves. The laws are absolutely insane and desperately need to be modified to give families a better toolbox to help people they love.

The old state hospitals that warehoused people who could have functioned with minimal support had to go, I agree with that. We went way too far in the other direction. This whole issue needs to be revisited but I don't see the will to do so happening any time soon.

People like this woman will just be allowed to drop through the chasms (not cracks) and end up on the street, untreated, and with no way to get them evaluated and treated while they are incapable of the insight that would tell them that's exactly what they need.

Can you see this gal signing herself in to a mental hospital any time soon? HA! Me neither.

become general social issues, maybe the will to modify the laws will develop. Meantime, families and individuals cope the best they can with very difficult situations.
