Wide open with people coming and going, the huge building was/is an extremely insecure, potential "target".
Would add that it is also vulnerable to Florida's sometimes violent weather. The resort sits on a barrier island. The Atlantic Ocean is on its east and the Intracoastal Waterway hems in the west side. The island is only 18 miles long and is three-quarters of a mile at its widest and as narrow as 500 feet in other areas. Highest elevation above sea level is 30 feet at the Palm Beach Country Club golf course.

It is possible that Trump even bragged about having possession of the material, so everyone would know there were there.
