So he can't flee even if he wants to. Well, unless a corrupt government gives him refuge.

Or can they? I honestly don't know ...

(32,761 posts)Happens alot.
But we do it with lots of criminals. They are already on the run, trying to avoid being arrested and have their passports on them. So, they get a court order.
The physical passport is just that...Trump could say, "I lost my passport" and apply for another one. If the passport has been revoked/cancelled then he can't get a replacement. If it hasn't, he can get a new passport.
Beetwasher.
(3,154 posts)There's due process, they don't just cancel or revoke your passport before your even charged with anything, but they do confiscate it if your a targete. After Indictment or Conviction may be a different story.

(32,761 posts)They revoked Snowden's passport, even though it was still in his possession.
(Reuters) - The United States has revoked the passport of former national security contractor Edward Snowden, an official source familiar with the decision said on Sunday.
It was not immediately clear how Snowden was able to travel, and the official offered no details. An aircraft thought to be carrying him landed in Moscow on Sunday after Hong Kong let the former U.S. National Security Agency contractor leave the territory, despite Washingtons efforts to extradite him to face espionage charges

Recursion
(56,582 posts)If you have work that takes you to, e.g., both Israel and Egypt, you need two passports because Egypt won't process a passport with an Israeli entry stamp in it. Ditto PRC and Taiwan, India and Pakistan, and a dozen other hot spots. Also I'm pretty sure the President gets a black or light blue passport as part of his job (the light blue is a laissez-passer rather than a passport, technically, but they're essentially the same thing); that's probably the expired one.

(25,197 posts)RW rage. The FBI might or might not have his passports if they were in the materials taken from MAL. But it might not be cancelled.
Or they might not have it at all.
I think he is 1) ramping up RW rage, and 2) playing a game with DOJ to find out if his passport is valid because he is ready to flee if he thinks he will be arrested.
But he could find out easily enough if he applied for a new one. So this comment from TFG sounds like a rage instigator.

(6,115 posts)Lots of chatter on twitter from legal people who say the FBI was there for more than the stolen boxes. There was another search warrant that the DOJ asked to be kept sealed when they asked for this one to be unsealed. Nobody yet knows if that was for a different location or for other things than the stolen classified info.
OneGrassRoot

former9thward
(33,424 posts)I don't really care. My point is the OP was amazed they were in a secure location -- no matter who has them now. From the OP:Second, why were they in boxes? The OP doesn't think passports should be in secure locations like safes. I guess they should be laying around on the coffee table.
LeftInTX
(32,761 posts)And other container/boxes collectively stored and found with the boxes and documents etc
IOW: They did not sort or sift through the contents on sight. And this would cover their bases in the event that there were personal items that were mixed in items that were part of the warrant.
Page 4

So, it's entirely possible passports were in one of the evidence boxes, even if they are not specifically mentioned in the warrant.

(25,197 posts)His mother was a Scottish immigrant. Would that entitle him to dual citizenship? I don't know the UK rules on that.
Mariana
(15,452 posts)Now, people don't lose UK citizenship just because they got naturalized in the US. They don't care what their citizens say to the Yanks during the naturalization ceremony, about renouncing all other allegiances. To lose UK citizenship they have to formally renounce it to the proper British authorities via whatever their renunciation process is.
wnylib

(19,864 posts)I've researched this, because my father was born in the UK. If one parent is a UK citizen, kids are eligible for a UK passport. (It does have to be a parent, sorry, wnylib.)
My dad didn't get around to getting naturalized until I was 19. My understanding (which may or may not be correct) is that I wouldn't be eligible for a UK passport if he'd been naturalized before I was born, but who knows?
In any case, I can see Trump's mom not being in a hurry to get naturalized. She was married to a US citizen and may not have felt much urgency about it.
muriel_volestrangler
(103,266 posts)And what applies because of your father doesn't necessarily apply because of your mother, thanks to old-fashioned misogyny:
children born abroad in the same way as British men. Children born before 1
January 1983 to British mothers can apply for registration as a British citizen under
section 4C of the British Nationality Act 1981.They will normally qualify if they would
have become British citizens automatically under that Act had women been able to
pass on citizenship in the same way as men.
...
Where you are considering registering a person born outside the UK to a British
mother before 1 January 1949, you must be satisfied that their birth was registered
with a UK consulate in the 12 month period after their birth.

(15,452 posts)My daughter was born in the US so she's a US citizen, but she also was born a citizen of the UK because her father met the requirements to pass on his UK citizenship. The only way she can lose the UK citizenship she was born with is if she renounces.

(7,507 posts)Apparently it's not all that uncommon for high-level govt officials who travel & there are reasons, for example, there are still some Arab countries that won't allow you in if you have an Israeli stamp in your passport.

You can't fly into Mexico without one, but you can cross over..
If you don't have a passport, the US will accept your birth certificate on return. (Some people crossed the border a few months ago. I asked, "Did you get a passport?" "No, I had my birth certificate and they accepted it" ) If you don't have documentation, you can be detained until they can verify that you're a US citizen.
