McConnell offers dour midterm forecast, cites 'candidate quality' as GOP Senate hopefuls struggle
Mitch McConnell conceded that Republicans face a tough task in flipping the Senate majority.
McConnell said that "candidate quality" has a lot to do with the races, a nod to the GOP's current struggles.
Pundits have increasingly predicted that Democrats may hold the chamber while the GOP flips the House.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday offered a meager forecast of his party's chances of flipping the Senate this November as Republican nominees in key races struggle to catch up to their opponents.
"I think there's probably a greater likelihood the House flips than the Senate," McConnell said in Kentucky, per NBC News's Frank Thorp V. "Senate races are just different, they're statewide, candidate quality has a lot to do with the outcome."
McConnell's outlook comes as GOP nominees in the nation's most closely contested states struggle to keep up.

(49,999 posts)An unsupported allegation about Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announcing he would resign if he did not become Senate Majority leader in the upcoming midterm elections has been retweeted at least 30,000 times on Twitter. But Reuters found no evidence McConnell has made such statement.
One of the earliest iterations Reuters identified was from the morning of June 28 (here). Mitch McConnell said if hes not Majority Leader after the midterms hell quit. Im okay with that, the user wrote.

(11,744 posts)"Senate races are different..." Translation, "We can cheat a lot better to win House seats. We have that under wraps with gerrymandering" Senate races are a little tougher because you actually have to have a message and ability to articulate. McConnell has his seat locked. He's an incumbent and has A LOT of dark money behind him. Winning a seat against an incumbent Democrat or an open seat, might be more difficult, especially if you policies suck ass and your candidates are crazy bastards.

(10,921 posts)It's not about "candidate quality", @MoscowMitch. It's about Idea Quality. When you run on the promise of destruction, telling us you will kill our Social Security, stop all abortions and bring back the Mango Mussolini, while giving more massive tax breaks to the billionaires, what did you really think would happen?

(6,254 posts)the Democrats pushed through historic legislation over the past 2 years makes me sick. McCarthy as leader pushing lie after lie and conspiracy theories while further dividing and degrading the our country and its institutions. I have heard it said that destroying
Democracies start out slowly but end fast. If Rs win the House or Senate after all Democrats and Biden have done the past 2 years then we are definitely seeing the rapid collapse of our once good nation. Not to mention losing after the tsunami of disastrous SCOTUS decisions brought to us by Republican Justices who have violated the most basic of legal principles and their oaths of office.

(7,819 posts)the nation is 'center right'...it has not been at all. When was the last time a gop candidate for potus won the popular vote? 2004? And when was the last time gop had more votes for House candidates than dems, nationally? My memory is that dems outvote the gop by huge margins nationally but because of fixed districts the gop often gets more candidates elected. That's not 50/50...
That McConnell has moved off of the 'center right' stance and admits the nation is 50/50 reflects a trend but it's still not accurate.
(Further, if you don't look at votes for candidates but look at issues...dem positions are viewed much more favorably than gop platform issues whatever those are now)
