Under the law, Senate Bill 797, which passed during last years legislative session, schools are required to display the posters if they are donated.
The law went into effect last year, but these posters werent popping up then as many school officials and parents were more concerned about new COVID-19 strains and whether their local public school would even open for in-person classes.
The In God We Trust law was authored by state Sen. Bryan Hughes, the East Texas Republican who crafted Texas Senate Bill 8, which restricted abortion to the first six weeks or so of pregnancy starting Sept. 1, 2021. The abortion law artfully skirted legal challenge by relying on the public instead of law enforcement to enforce it.
Hughes In God We Trust poster law is also precisely written. Texas public schools or colleges must display the national motto in a conspicuous place but only if the poster is donated or purchased by private donations.
After an appearance for a Northwest Austin Republican Womens Club event on Tuesday, Hughes touted the new law and praised the groups stepping up to donate the poster

(13,480 posts)Texas politicians like Hughes are funded by oil billionaires who are trying to kill public education so that extremist private Christian schools will be the only option and will be funded by all taxpayers. Im not sure if this is the most backward state in the Union, but its close. Yesterday, I read a social media post by someone insisting that the contrails left by jets were really someone spraying something in the environment to prevent rain, claiming that it was well-known science. When asked for scientific citation, she posted an old YouTube video. That she thought she was providing unarguable proof says a lot about some of the Texas voters and why we have so many irrational state legislators and several in the House that are about as dumb as dirt.
If we voters are unable to wrest control of the state from the wingnuts, it will be as bad as Afghanistan in a few years as far as womens and minority rights are concerned. Forced births will just add to the poverty that already exists.

(16,270 posts)It used to be a lot of nutty bills would be introduced and they would just die. Now with the repubs turning into the MAGA party they're passing and our wanna-be tyrant Abbott is signing anything put in front of him.
I hope we can get rid of some of these crazies in Nov.

(60,186 posts)Back in the days of the old Union of Soviet Socialist Relics, including outlying places like Castros Cuba or even Rene's Seychelles, the Party (whatever version of socialist paradise terminology it was using for itself) was so insecure about the peoples dissatisfaction with their rule that they had to plant posters and propaganda banners just about everywhere. These were helpful reminders, just in case the people momentarily forgot how wonderful the current dictatorship was, you see. The more they did that, of course, the less the people believed them. I saw them on Mahé, I saw them in Havana, I saw them in East Berlin as the soldiers goose-stepped past in unison. Heil Honecker!
And after all that, the governor of Texas now thinks the tactic will suddenly have a different result.
What was that definition of insanity, again?
