"All big firm lawyers have told me that their firms won't let them do it," Dershowitz said in an interview. "The firms won't let them go near any case involving Trump. These are firms that want to continue to have clients, and they know that if they represent Donald Trump, they'll lose a lot of clients."
Dershowitz spoke from experience.
After he represented Trump in his second Senate impeachment trial following the deadly January 6 Capitol riot, Dershowitz said he lost job opportunities and many of his speaking engagements.
"Everybody who has called me has shown reluctance to do it," he said. "They say their law firms won't let them do it. Their husbands or wives won't let them do it. Their children won't let them do it. Their friends won't let them do it even though they want to do it.

Wait, didn't Benedict Donald just say recently that this was a lie? That big firm lawyers weren't refusing to represent him?
Another lie by Benedict Donald?
I'm shocked I tells ya, just shocked.
Even Alan Dershowitz says it's true.

(64,852 posts)Sure, the concern about not being paid by TFG is real.
But, that's short term revenue.
Losing regular clients cost money long-term. Likely a much bigger deal than the risk of getting stiffed by the conman.
calimary
(81,110 posts)Then your credibility as an attorney goes right down the drain. AND you risk not getting paid. So you're a loser twice over.
I think if I needed a lawyer on that level, I'd include a look through the ones who said no to him. One of those might be worth talking to.
MarineCombatEngineer
(12,250 posts)because it seems all the good lawyers are telling Benedict Donald to get bent.
Claustrum
(4,845 posts)It might not be the whole bill but they usually keep a retainer (money up front) so the employees get paid while doing all the upfront paperwork before going on trials.
I know it's common around here to say he stiffed the lawyers but big law firms have the resource to sue and get the money back. I doubt even TFG would stiff them. They aren't some small construction contractors who don't have the means and ability to go to court to get the money back.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)for instance, the big four firms who represent most really big political defendants long ago said they wouldn't represent tRump.
He doesn't pay his bills. He takes pride in being able to cheat others and goes to great lengths to do it. If he has to pay up front he'll likely sue to get his money back.
(The other 3 main reasons that no reputable firm will represent him are that other clients object and leave, desirable interns object and may refuse to sign on, and, another real biggie!, he doesn't follow their legal advice. Interestingly, I didn't hear sexual misbehavior involving female employees mentioned, but no doubt that was always extremely well known also.)
Claustrum
(4,845 posts)They were routinely being paid. You can check his campaign payment back then. I checked because I wanted to know if the firm I worked for did work for him and they did. I think TFG got tired of paying and it is why the RNC took over paying for his "legal bills".
Seriously, do you think anyone can stiff the most famous law firms in the US and get away with it? Their whole job is to represent people in court daily and are some of the best legal minds in our country.
The main problem for representing TFG is that he doesn't follow legal advice and he would demand them to speak on camera about his "ideas" of defense, which none of them have any legal basis. It's a huge problem for law firms when your client steps in and asks why your attorney defended TFG with this non-sensical legal defense.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)They don't need his business and don't want to be bothered with him.
But, sure, I got the distinct impression from one that refusal to follow legal advice may have been, regretfully, the bigger reason -- but that only after the head of this slimy little crime family became the Republican presidential nominee and then POTUS.

(82,849 posts)Oh, for those halcyon days before the former guy's second impeachment trial, when all you had to worry about were dinner invitations at homes on Martha's Vineyard and whether you kept your skivvies on while getting a massage. Yeah, it was only after you did your part for the nation in January 2021 that it all came crashing down. Keep telling yourself that, because nobody else is buying it.
And if there really were folks who wanted to represent Needy Amin for free (like I suspect you did), they could just resign from their firms, hang out their sole practitioner shingle, and defend the heck out of the former guy.
Dershowitz gets more craven by the minute.
