Well, this is disturbing:
The network boss camped out in mid-July in a room on the first floor of the Senate side of the Capitol, S-120, where he asked GOP lawmakers to come talk with him privately. That arrangement avoided alerting the reporters who stalk the halls of the Capitol, sources said, and accommodated Republican lawmakers who preferred not to be seen hobnobbing with him.
Licht's message, according to one of the lawmakers who sat down with him as well as to several sources briefed on the exchanges: "We want to win back your trust."
What this moron fails to understand is that this is not about being fair to one side and not the other. At one point, when the Republican party stood for something and wasnt a cult, you could have real arguments over ideology, policy, and even values. However, as a journalist, one thing you CANNOT do is ever give credence to lies.
When one party embraces a conspiracy theory that claims thousands of election officials, poll watchers, Republican governors, and Trump-appointed judges conspired with Joe Biden to create millions of bamboo ballots that marked him as president---but simultaneously marked Republicans down-ballot to throw people off the scentthere is no debate. There is no debate that Hillary and Obama ran a pedophile ring out of a pizza parlor in DC. There is no debate that the January 6th rioters werent tourists. There is no debate that climate change is happening. There is no debate that Trump wasnt allowed to store nuclear secrets in his fing golf club basement.
Trump lied in office. Repeatedly. Yet news outlets were hesitant to call him out for lying. When he said Korean war veterans parents were tweeting him or that his inauguration was the largest crowd in US history, you have to call him out for lying. He is. You know it, and I know it. You dont get to pretend that he has a valid point when you know damn well he doesnt.
I get that CNN wants to be seen as fair and balanced. Yet the attacks from Trump and his cult didnt happen because you were being unfair to him. They happened because you called him out on his B.S. You will never regain trust if you decide thats what you need to do.
Do you really think having Sydney Powell or Mike Lindell on to rant without being challenged will save CNN? You will not convince one MAGA Republican to become a regular viewer without compromising your journalistic integrity. Period. What you will do is bleed the viewers you still have. If I want to be lied to, I can go to OAN, Newsmax, InfoWar, FoxNews, etc. They all have an agenda, and journalism isnt it.
The GOP has devolved into a cult of personality that now justifies treason, insurrection and espionage. Promising QAnon and MAGA legislators a forum to spout nonsense and forbidding your hosts from challenging them serves no one, although that is what GOP legislators are asking for in return for considering to appear on CNN.
I know CNNs ratings are suffering, but catering to right-wing extremists to feed their appetite for fake news wont help you. Neither will killing shows like Reliable Sources. All you did was send a gift to your networks worst critics that they were right about you. As Trump would say, SAD!

I've dropped everything but Rachel and I'll sometimes watch Chris but even he is Cult45 all the time, along with the seditious January 6th riot. I was watching the shows for UA invasion updates, but like Zelenskyy said, he was worried that the media would lose interest and move on to something different and boy did they. BBC is the only network that *consistently* has updates from UA.
BBC World News is about the only news channel I'll watch anymore. When they interview anyone, sports to politician, they are not interrupted by commercials and the interviewer won't let them off the hook if they ask a question makes the interviewee squirm. I know it, too, is sanitized for our protection, but they sure beat anything the US is putting out there, even with the mergers with Sky News & NBC, along with other US & UK "news" organizations.

(58,785 posts)yet another transfer of personnel from Fox to CNN. Those there already not effective enough?
As for who replaces Anderson Cooper or ? -- Chris Wallace to begin with? After Wallace went from Fox to CNN+, he lost his new gig when that shut down, so now he's already officially at CNN proper but not in a position worthy of a Fox star like him.
Hannity of course isn't suitable for the Fox-Lite product, but some of the business anchors (who have to stay more attached to reality) seem like possibilities. Look for someone to claim Fox has gone too far for his or her journalistic integrity, or that Neil Cavuto had his hand up her skirt, whatever, then reappear at CNN.

Streaming internet shows, podcasts, and social media dwarf cable news.
Cable news is a tiny sliver of what is out there, and it has an ageing, older audience demographically. The median age for an MSNBC viewer is 68, maybe 69 now, so 43, 44 years older that me atm.
Their numbers with younger voters are horrific.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/media/2021/05/24/msnbc-rashida-jones/
Cable news is not for the young.
In recent years, the median age of viewers who watch the big three cable news networks CNN, Fox News Channel and MSNBC has been in the 60s, an audience that television news industry analyst Andrew Tyndall calls positively geriatric. At MSNBC, the median age this year has been 68, four years older than CNN, according to the latest data from Nielsen. Thats up from a median age of 65 in 2017.
snip
I resemble that! BTW, I'm a young 67.
I will delete CNN from my favorites and not miss it.

I can tell just from reading here that a lot of cable news watching Democrats are glued to Fox more than they ever admit, giving the channel ratings and advertising dollars.
I imagine it's a Howard Stern effect (the people he pissed off listened to him the most).
But seeing the numbers of just how many Democrats are watching it will never not be funny to me.
My problem with cable news isn't their bias (I don't care). It's that they're boring and uninformative. What talking heads spend 30-60 minutes blabbing about is information I can glean in 5 minutes by reading a few articles. And those articles won't be filled with speculation and just plain wrong idiot pundit opinions.
It's just a massive waste of time. Even on sick days when I'm glued to bed or couch, I cannot fathom it.

C BLOCK (28:48) Things I Promised Not To Tell: CNN cancels the only TV show that regularly criticized Fox News, and fires host Brian Stelter (30:23) The Daily Beast quotes a source who insists new CNN President Chris Licht "didn't want to do this" (33:11) I call BS because at MSNBC, Licht was Joe Scarborough's Henchman and after Scarborough attacked me on twitter in a violation of MSNBC policy that was supposed to resort in automatic suspension, Licht warned management that if they suspended Scarborough, Scarborough would go to right wing media and say he was being persecuted by me because he was a conservative. (37:48) In May 2010 Licht also helped Scarborough get Markos Moulitsas of Daily Kos suspended from MY show and ultimately banned from MSNBC because Scarborough didn't like something Moulitsas had tweeted (40:29) Licht demanding that Maddow, Matthews and I stop criticizing "Joe's friends" was a staple at MSNBC (41:25) and Licht was hired to run CNN to enable the new Trump-Friendly owners to move out the liberals like Stelter.

It's the only way they know, authoritarian as in corporate or oligarch rule.
I believe the ultimate question in the back of corporate medias' mind is how will this affect their primary commercial buying patrons and corporate owners, the less than 1%?
Their current business model will always direct them back to that star as their guiding principle on the rare occasions when they stray or seem to stray.

(9,707 posts)He is a threat to our democracy.
I can't start one due to my work in nonprofit news but someone sure should.
CNN's action is a threat to our democracy. Journalists are obligated to report truth, not propaganda.
The answer CNN should have given to the GOP Congressional members is the same once I once gave a politician (state legislator) who got in trouble for illegal campaign contributions. He called me to vent and complain about why he was only getting negative news coverage and how to get positive coverage. I told him, "Do something good. I know people aren't one dimensional. You made a mistake. Learn from it, and do something positive."
I didn't think he would, but he actually did take the words to heart. He introduced a couple of decent bills to protect internet privacy, and when he got elected to a more local office, he began to do some things to help people -- leading efforts to fund shelters for the homeless, and he is a Republican, but nothing like the rats in Congress.
The GOP members should be told when they behave like spineless cowards making excuses for treasonous actions they can expect negative coverage. When all of their votes hurt people instead of helping them, that's now how to get positive coverage.
If they show political courage and basic human decency, they will get positive coverage. If they spread lies about a stolen election, whip up mobs to violence, and vote against everything good or decent, they can expect appropriately accurate coverage.
While they should be able to share their views on matters of opinion (say, someone thinks a bill is more costly than we can afford, or didn't do enough to help their state) that's fine to cover in a spirit of fairness. But not lies and unAmerican actions.
CNN needs a CEO willing to stand up and say such things.
