A really hard core Trump backer coworker in my rural very red area confided in me today that he "can no longer support Trump after the theft of classified documents", and believes Trump is a traitor.
Said he is voting Libertarian next time.
Baby steps.

(5,058 posts)It's not going to change his cultist minds but TFG will become toxic for independent or "reasonable" republicans. It's enough to ensure that he will lose if he ever runs again. I think there will be mass exodus and a separation from TFG once his chosen crazy candidates loses in November. Suddenly, the "reasonable" republican voices will start leaving the TFG train. Though, for now, they need the cultists to have a chance in November.

In some ways the old "conservative" (R)epuglicons had more scruples than libertarians.
I wouldn't trust any of them no matter how much they flipped and flopped.

(1,107 posts)Libertarianism as a political ideology is a lot like a barn full of feral cats.
The cats didn't pay for, maintain, or build the barn. They don't like being inside it since they really don't trust each other or any other animals in the barn. The problem for them is they hate being outside in the rain, cold and hungry, even more.
At some level they know they depend on the farmer, but Gawd do they hate having to accept that.

(25,324 posts)Off the top, hitting rock bottom, betrayal, too much contradiction to handle, since cults deny any outside information (hence, denial is a key requrement)
This sounds about right. RW'ers used to be oh, so patriotic, to the U.S., not to Russia (you remember those t-shirt guys) and to all of us who served, aerospace workers, and countless others who took an oath to the Constitution, gross mishandling of classified documents, not for any kind of justice (in case cover-ups are classified), but for sheer greed, spite and personal gain, as this seems to be, is just too much to tolerate. A very clear violation of laws, and we all had reviews and refreshers on the right way to handle them.
There's that gravitational force that keeps a personality cult together, and it can be broken, but that has to come from within. Just getting enough real facts out there, past the wall of denial, does work. (Thank our congressional investigators and what little MSM that cares to put the unvarnished facts out there).
How they held all that denial and contradiction inside is amazing, but cults are like that.
I want to say what a great example Joe Biden has been.
We often keep our "enemies" so much in our minds that we become them. That's why it's important to be objective, and direct our righteous rage against the acts and the evil intents. People do come around. Maybe many lives later (billions and billions?) but I do remember George Wallace finally feeling the weight of all he said and did.
Meanwhile, be the best people we can be, dedicated to helping others, as indicated on this chart (which someone created, and which I should edit.)

Beats the hell out of blind rage, spite and projection of one's worst qualities onto others.
Peace!

(18,621 posts)I read or hear about many comments from 'unnamed' Republican lawmakers who are anti-Trump in private but silent publicly.
The Republicans had two opportunities to throw Trump out of office and were too chicken shit to do it because they aren't Liz Cheney type patriots. I blame them far more than Trump for the current situation.

(179,869 posts)The Texas GOP is worried. Normally third parties hurt the Democratic Party but this cycle the GOP want to know the Libertarians off the ballot

Among the Republicans signing onto the lawsuit, filed earlier this month, are Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and congressional candidate Monica de la Cruz, who is running for a key battleground seat that runs from McAllen to the San Antonio area.
Their petition takes aim at 23 Libertarians who, they say, ran afoul of a 2019 state law that requires third-party candidates to pay the same filing fee as Republicans and Democrats or, as an alternative, collect the same number of petition signatures to secure a spot on the ballot. The lawsuit comes ahead of the Aug. 26 deadline to remove a candidate from this years midterm ballot a deadline Republicans missed in 2020 when they unsuccessfully sought to knock off 44 Libertarian candidates.
The courts decision could have major implications if any of the 23 races this year are decided by a narrow margin. Libertarians are thought to pose a threat to Republican candidates in tight races, possibly siphoning off just enough votes to sway a close outcome.
As Texas has grown increasingly competitive in recent cycles, both parties have ramped up efforts to purge third-party candidates from the ballot, with Democrats aiming to declare Green Party candidates ineligible. Polling this summer has suggested the margins could be tight in top-of-ballot statewide races in 2022, including those for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general.

(1,083 posts)A couple days after the 1/6 insurrection a big-time Trump backer I knew was supposedly disgusted with Trump and said "I'm sorry I ever voted for him (Trump)". A month later he was back to ranting about a "stolen" election and arguing 1/6 was an Antifa false flag. Sadly, he was all-in with Trump again.

Based of John Birch Society teachings and pushed by the Koch Brothers.
They are the most self-affecting mofos on the planet. They claim they want liberty, but really they mean liberty for me and fuck the rest of y'all. If others happen to benefit from their plan, it's more of an accident than a plan. They are also the most grubby when it comes to public money, plugging into as many programs as possible. If they see something they can tap into, they view it as though it's deserved. If they can't plug into a program, they somehow view it as a tax that they must be funding in some manner.

(9,354 posts)(I say "broad;y" because there are probably an infinite quirky ways for them to define themselves)
Some define a Libertarian as one who is poopsed to Authoritarian government. That definition fits me.
Others - including most if not all Americans who claim to be Libertarian and who ever vote Libertarian - define a Libertarian as one who is opposed to ANY form of government.
I'd love to allow those spoiled brats to keep the term with all its baggage. Except that "Anti-authoritarian" is pretty cumbersome.

(3,075 posts)I work out w/someone who is a die hard republican, we don't talk about it too much, always awkward when conversation swings that way. but he knows where I stand and I know where he stands. Around J6, he stopped watching or listening to the news. With the Confidential Document news, he actually initiated a conversation, saying he has a BIL who is in the military, and he's not allowed to talk about anything that he sees or hears; even HE could see how illegal it is to take home secrets. I think the majority of us know someone who works (or has worked) for the military or some sort of security and they are very aware that what happened it illegal. My brother works for air force intelligence and he isn't even allowed to take his phone into the building. I just hope this opens a lot of eyes.
