(60,144 posts)Russian Nobel Peace Prize winner Muranov recently put up his gold Nobel medal for auction. He said in advance that 100% of the proceeds would go to UNICEF for the specific purpose of helping Ukrainian children in dire circumstances. He found an American auction company to hold the auction for free, even though an auction company lives by retaining a percentage of what they sell. Seeing as how the high bid was $103,500,000 and the auction company normally gets a minimum of a 20% buyers fee, they gave up a healthy chunk of change here. The winning bid seems like an odd number until one hears that the bid came from Switzerland. $103,500,000 was exactly 100,000,000 Swiss Francs on the day of the auction. To make sure everything was completely transparent, the auction company had the winning bidder wire the money not to them, but straight to UNICEF, so that it was clear that UNICEF was the sole recipient.
The money was there within 48 hours, though the buyer wished to remain anonymous. I can well imagine why. Im sure that there is more than one really rich anti-Putin Russian living in Switzerlandsomeone who wanted to help out, but would prefer not to have Putins gunmen at his bedside at 3 AM some day the following week.

(60,144 posts)The two co-CEOs are friends of mine. When they offered to do the sale for free, they thought they were giving up $1 million, not $20 million, but they just shrugged their shoulders and said, good for the kids.
Muranov was at the auction in person, and was as amazed as everyone else, actually went up to the podium and hugged the auctioneer. Putin would probably had bombs planted in the room if he had the slightest idea what was going to happen.

(4,298 posts)a world without Putin and Trump in power? I wish something would happen to shake the very ground upon which these global autocrats stand. Maybe this incident was it. They need to be fearful instead of causing fear.

(3,493 posts)(Why would you go for the daughter instead of the father who is described as the spiritual guide behind Putin's war), I don't see how the strike would be any different than the US strike that took out AL Zawahiri. I do agree that it's unlikely that Ukraine would put resources into this operation at this time. Usually you concentrate on winning the war first, and settle scores after.

(81,119 posts)I don't see them wasting resources on this operation and most importantly they are smart about optics.
Zelensky is a genius at rallying world support, without it he is a dead man walking and he knows it.
Murdering pretty blond young Russian women is not a good look.
That said I would guess that Ukrainian covert agents are stirring up shit in Russia.
And could have helped things along.
And I would also guess they have some help from the western democracies along these lines.
We have assets in Russian, why not use them to help us in the war effort?
That is unless Trump has not had them all killed.

Something doesnt compute. Either President Zelenskyy was in the dark or he wasnt.
Was the twitter account hacked?
How did those photos appear??????
Where is the evidence beyond a Tweet?
Why wasnt a military target found?
Why did the wrong person die ?
Was security around the target car so lapse ?
How was the bomb exploded ? Remote control or a clock or a mechanical trigger or
.. ?
What time?
What exact location?
What strategic benefit does this bring to Ukraines strategy?

(9,612 posts)Three things to remember:
1. The FSB faked an assassination-attempt on russian media-personality and pro-war propagandist Vladimir Solovyov.
https://tass.com/society/1442735
https://www.thedailybeast.com/russian-fsb-spies-hilariously-screw-up-vladimir-putins-assassination-plot-claim
The FSB supposedly busted a group of six ukrainian spies in a Moscow flat, who had planned to kill Solovyov via car-bomb. According to the FSB's initial reports, which were later redacted, these ukrainians spies had drugs, swastika-T-shirts, a photo of Adolph Hitler and 3 SIMS-video-games in their room.
It has been speculated that an FSB-agent was supposed to plant 3 Sim-Cards as evidence, but fucked up the assignment.
2. The russian government went to the trouble of trying to assassinate a humble anti-corruption activist, Alexei Navalny, and they went to the trouble of covering up the murder of Sergej Magnitsky who had accidently stumbled upon a cabal of corrupt russian judges and government-agents.
3. A dead Aleksandr Dugin is more valuable to Russia than to Ukraine.
To Ukraine, Dugin is just one dozens of russian propagandists. Killing him would change nothing.
To Russia, he is a martyr.
Without more info, the tweet is clickbait at best.

I find it highly suspicious that he, at the last minute, decided to ride in another car, this smells of an FSB op., what better way to shore up support for the war in Ukraine than to have video of a prominent Russian figure grieving for his slain daughter while blaming Ukraine.
