A Katy ISD police officer temporarily removed a copy of a book from a high school library last month as part of an investigation after a woman filed a criminal complaint alleging the district was providing “harmful” material to minors.

The book, “Flamer,” by Mike Curato, had been formally reviewed by a committee and deemed appropriate for high school students in the district in March, records show. However, a vocal group of parents and community members continued to speak out against the book at many board meetings, saying the descriptions of sex in the work constitute “pornography.”

During the investigation process, the book was “checked out” by Katy ISD police, said Maria Corrales DiPetta, general manager of media relations for the district.

“Flamer” is a graphic novel about a boy navigating friendship and bullying at a summer camp that explores issues of sexuality and sexual orientation. It won the Lambda Literary Award for Children's and Young Adult Literature in 2021. It was also listed in The Horn Book Magazine's ranking of the best books of 2020.

Why does the vocal minority have this much sway?

Why do they get to determine what gets canceled, what others can read?

Why aren't others who oppose this intrusive behavior standing up for the 1st Amendment?

Ya know, they don't want others to make decisions for themselves, even though those decisions aren't even ones they choose for themselves.

of banned books. Mostly bad stuff about Mormon history or about weird Mormon rituals. There was a book dealer downstairs at the mall that carried them all. We made it a point to find those books and we read them all
Because that's what kids do. It probably just sit on the shelf and collect dust if some dogooder didn't publish it's existance.

They weren't as graphic as some current books are about sex and sexual persuasion but HS kids can read anything they want. They can handle that stuff.

If you don’t want your kid to read a certain book, let the teacher know. That way she won’t give it to him.

You have no right to speak for all the parents in the school. Did you check with all of them to see if they agree with you?

How dare you to presume your viewpoint represents all parents?

Finally other parents need to speak up and stop this bullying.
