(17,557 posts)the chance that they can't CONTROL teachers. NOTICE I said 'CHANCE.' Truth is, the laws are lining up to allow them to do so.
The "curriculum" debate has been what's driving the issue for years. The 'power' that school boards have over what's being taught (plus figure in what the state programs can mandate) is driving the crisis in our schools. It is all magnified when you look at what DeSatin is doing to the public education system in Florida.
Would YOU want to work for that idiot?
The Repukes have wisely schemed their way into power starting at the LOCAL level - school boards, county commissioners, state legislators - to the point that THEY control what's happening in YOUR town - and that is now giving them the power to establish the rules for ELECTIONS - who will 'decide' who won - and if they don't like it - they have the power to 'fix' it!
We've given away TOO much - NOW is the time to step up and get control of our DEMOCRATIC society.
Yes, GAWD, I hate to say it - but it is time for us to TAKE BACK AMERICA - like it really needs to be done........

when people complain about teacher's unions.
Me? I want to know why we made conditions for teachers so shitty that they felt the need to unionize.

- educated in religious doctrines

(55,137 posts)Teachers make 33% less than other professions with similar degrees. That is A LOT and there are are zillion other reasons why teaching is a shitty career.
When I first started teaching I learned that one of the reasons for the low pay and respect was due to the unusually high amount of females in the profession. Women are always paid less and this is one clear example of how the business of schooling is all about $$$$$. Districts don't care about the kids or the teachers. It is all hot air when the pretend they care when it all comes down to the bottom line and they waste tons of $$$. It is all about taking kick backs from textbook publishers, etc.

(10,804 posts)Or let's just stick to minimum wage of $15?
$15/hr. from 8am to 3pm, which is 7hr. or $105 per day.
30 kids per classroom so that's $105 x 30 = $3,150/day
$3,150 x 5 days a week = $15,750/week
$15,750 x 39 weeks (9 months) = $614,250 for a school year.
We can adjust for reality, because I really don't know how many hours a teacher really spends
or average class size or how many weeks in a school year. But taking half that, you'd live a
really good life.
