General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsTrump is asking his advisers if he is going to be "indicted".
Heard a short report on CNN about it.
I would be surprised if he is indicted before the election in November. However, who knows what that maniac, Merrick Garland might do?
But, I do believe he will be indicted.
He has tried every trick in his delays and deceptions book and none of them are working. He has stated his innocence, even with all the evidence staring him in the face. He has filed suit. He has gone searching for a friendly judge, one that he appointed. He has called names. He has blamed others. He has threatened the Attorney General. He has called the DOJ "sleazy". He has called for the return of "his" documents. He has done everything except offer a defense for what he did.
Now, he is worried that he might be indicted.
Hopefully, he will not have to worry much longer.

He's running out of space and he's painting himself into a corner legally. His cronies and motley followers are being gathered up and jugged, his CFO has to choose between honoring his plea agreement or standing mute and getting 15yrs instead of a year. The walls are tightening.
Protecting his due process protects ours. It's not like he's a litter bug or shop lifter.
He'll be in jail as soon as is legally possible.

(19,192 posts)The DOJ was extremely careful throughout, they weren't just going to raid without very good reason and imminent threats to our security. I also think the DOJ is clever and the unredacted parts of this will be damning to Trump.
Today could very well be the most damaging day for Trump yet.
kentuck
(111,110 posts)Also, I believe the DOJ wants to educate the public as much as possible before there are any indictments. Today will likely be one of those teaching moments.

(14,891 posts)He is not self aware enough to commit suicide, and he is far, far, from hitlers bunker moment.
But he would run to another country, if for no other reason than it would keep him in the center of attention. Every media eye would be on that story and it would dominate everything for months.
As soon as he realizes he can control the narrative by running, he will.

(14,891 posts)He would have been publicly tortured beyond belief, then killed in a very painful way. There would be no trial. No exile. No prison. No quick execution. Just pain on top of pain.
Trump isn't facing any of that. At worst, he would be the center of a media circus for years and then get some cushy confinement until an eventual gop potus pardons him. The worst thing that would happen to him would be he wouldn't be able to speak publicly very easily.
He can instead have his circus and live in luxury until a pardon and then return.
LastLiberal in PalmSprings
(12,600 posts)I think you have described his plan in a nutshell. In 2024 he can offer the support of his "base" in return for a pardon on Day One. He could also threaten to work against a GOP nominee who doesn't make the Big Lie the centerpiece of their campaign.

(2,599 posts)but tRump and others like him will not. I see him a far greater flight risk. He has the means, and his mother was a Scott. He has that golf resort in Scotland (for as long as he can keep it). I won't speak for the government in Scotland, but there is an extradition treaty between the US and the UK, and unless Scotland votes to sever with the UK, that treaty would be enforced should he flee there prior to indictment (if that actually happens).
getagrip_already
(14,891 posts)Russia, china, and saudi arabia have no extradition treaties.
There are several others with discretionary treaties.
The rat has a lot of holes to flee to.
Texin
(2,599 posts)But tRump is half Scottish. Citizenship is relatively easy for someone who has proof of ancestry through a parent or grandparent. Of course, The UK does honor extraditions to the US from Scotland, and certainly would do so unless Scotland votes to leave the UK.

If the indictment of TDFG is worded in such a way that details the crimes he WILLFULLY and KNOWINGLY committed, how in God's name, does any Republican defend him? How does ANYONE else defend him?
Those in the House and Senate who voted twice NOT to impeach or convict TDFG, will have this albatross around their necks. Democrats will use this in every election from now on that they pledged loyalty to a corrupt man at the expense of the ideals of which this country was founded on....the RULE OF LAW.

(14,891 posts)Trips to out of state events supporting republican candidates, in a year when he is running for re-election in a state he only won by 20k votes, is a gauntlet thrown down.
He is doing everything a candidate needs to do be competitive in a gop pres primary. Even the smart money is backing him.
tfg is a sideshow. The gop is nearing a tipping point where they will wish him well, and ignore him. His followers will eventually find a new fire to set.

(20,747 posts)about him. That way, when they finally do indict, everyone will be expecting it. They've normalized the idea. The state dept has data on how long it takes to really saturate our society. The fact that it was on cnn is a good sign: That's the higher hanging fruit. Possibly means they're in end-stages of the prep. But that's just my opinion.
Mr. Ected
(9,672 posts)1, indict him immediately, because we the people are getting anxious and afraid that all of this will somehow be swept under the rug (the "same as it ever was" crowd).
2, wait until after the mid-terms so there won't be a post-indictment bump in MAGA voters showing up at the polls, many of whom would have sat it out since Trump himself isn't on the ballot.
And yes, you can compare Trump to any other citizen in the country and scream favoritism, but unlike most ordinary citizens, he has a cult of tens of millions who seemingly do his bidding no matter what. He IS different from us in how we proceed, but not on the application of justice. That must be consistent or the Constitution is nothing but a piece of meaningless paper.

(74 posts)He is probably trying to gauge when to flee. He needs an ankle bracelet right quick.
Indictment is either now or wait til mid November. Trump will be whining the whole way until he gets the knock. Is nationwide law enforcement ready? That is probably the big question. While DOJ usually lays low, this is a time for max PR. Magas and independents need to know what their boy has done.
Do we risk the mid terms? Tough question. I believe people have really short political memories. If he was arrested and a suitable case was made in court of public opinion, it could be positive issue for Democrats. Cop a "Justice for everybody!" theme and see where it takes us. You could tie taxes into this. Do you pay your taxes? Why are GOP defending tax criminals? Show photos of our troops and police.. They need our tax income for their health care and to do the job better..
Time is ticking. If the classified documents are a big deal, then make the arrest. Duh. If there is signs he sold them? Throw the book at him.
As long as their 2024 candidate is not Trump, we will have an incredible wedge. It is Trump. If Desantis gets nomination.. We run a write in Trump campaign through red and purple states and we will ride the Nader/Stein train to a Democratic president. Trunts can't quit that clown. It will never be the same with Desantis. He was never on TV for 30 years as rich bossy guy.

(417 posts)We truly have no idea how much he has compromised America. He removed classified/top-secret documents when he left office (I don't believe for one second that he thought they were his), we really have no idea what else is missing or what America's enemies have access too. There is a reason he surrounded himself with and appointed yes-men to the country's top-level positions. I don't think trump is the bumbling idiot that he portrays, and this may be much, much more detrimental than we know.
