Colorados secretary of state, Jena Griswold, is warning anyone who will listen that the fate of free and fair elections in the United States hangs in the balance in this Novembers midterm contests.
In many of the most competitive races for offices with authority over US elections, Republicans nominated candidates who have embraced or echoed Donald Trumps myth of a stolen election in 2020.
Griswold, who chairs the Democratic Association of Secretaries of State (Dass) and is running for re-election, is urging Americans to pay attention to the once-sleepy down-ballot contests for secretary of state lest they lose their democracy.
What we can expect from the extreme Republicans running across this country is to undermine free and fair elections for the American people, strip Americans of the right to vote, refuse to address security breaches and, unfortunately, be more beholden to Mar-a-Lago than the American people, Griswold, 37, said in an interview with the Guardian.
She added: For us, we are trying to save democracy.

(36,631 posts)From election deniers working elections to voter suppression laws and gerrymandering, the American Taliban, a.k.a. the Republican party, intends to substitute their selections for your votes.
Roe, Roe, Roe your vote
against theocracy!
Republicans revoke your rights
and kill democracy!
Paste your message to build a blue wave!

(2,957 posts)..no shit. But someone has got to get that message across to the majority of the electorate. I don't understand why the DNC isn't inundating the airwaves with pro-democracy informercials.

I expect there will be more.

(11,683 posts)The House passed legislation that would have fixed the voting rights problems. Thanks to two Democratic senators who took the side of Moscow Mitch and his filthy republicons, it did not survive the Democratic-controlled Senate.

(5,521 posts)For the first time that I remember I'm seeing polls which actually list "voting rights" and "preserving democracy" as choices along with the usual issues, and the electoral choices seem to rank high. I think that more US citizens are beginning to have some understanding of the trouble that our democracy is in. I don't think that we can count on mass media to highlight the issue. We must inform ourselves of several salient points and bring them up with friends and family. Hopefully we can wake up enough people in the middle, or even make some Republicans decide to sit this one out.

(13,538 posts)6 months ago the thought was that it would be the usual off year loss of 20-30 seats; especially with gas & food being what it is. But now the prediction is much lower than that, because gas is down a lot & trumps picks are bad general election candidates.

(16,385 posts)Thats definitely not insurmountable. If momentum stays on our side, we could actually keep the House.

(3,951 posts)Especially in non-Presidential years. We all really do need to do whatever we can to get people to vote.
Definitely.
I expect numbers to be much higher in MI with our Reproductive Rights proposal on the ballot in November.

(15,412 posts)We have those gerrymandering districts because people allowed them to do it.
This country ALWAYS bends over backwards to enable right wing jack assery.
Tommymac
(7,334 posts)THAT is how it is possible.
If we can mobilize Democratic and Independent voters in Red districts - we can win no matter what the polls or M$M 1% controlled talking TV heads say.
That is all it will take. We Dems and Indies outnumber them in almost EVERY district that is being contested. We are even polling well in historically solid Red districts - see Alaska for example.
The press and the 1% and Putin and TFG and Traitor Mitch WANT us to lose heart and go back and sit in our chairs and zombie out.
DON'T LET THAT HAPPEN. Ignore the purposefully disheartening noise. Talk to Your family, friends, co-workers, fellow students, players on your sports teams, patrons at your bar, and neighbors personally.
A strong GOTV GOTV GOTV beats Gerry Mander every single time.
It is going to be beautiful. The best GOTV ever.

(7,334 posts)We have to take away all platforms where TFG and his evil minions could potentially do damage.
Starting with The House and Senate.
Then the rest of the dominoes will start to fall.
