CHUCK TODD:
Im just curious. Liz Cheney said that in some cases she may have to help a Democrat win against sort of an anti-democracy Republican. Do you feel thats what youre going to be doing over the next couple of years yourself?
REP. ADAM KINZINGER:
Yes. Yeah, I mean, look, the biggest issue not everybody agrees with me, certainly in my party. And even Democrats like to say things like, Well, but youre still a conservative. Yeah, Im a conservative. But the bottom line is: The biggest threat right now to our country is democracy. And if you have Republicans that are running against even left-wing Democrats that believe in democracy and believe in voting, that person should be elected over somebody who basically would overthrow the will of the people and ultimately destroy this country. This country cannot survive outside of democracy. Itll turn into a power struggle between groups of different races, of different ethnicities, of different religions. Because the thing that holds us together is this belief that we can self-govern. Take that away, this countrys a mess. And so Republicans that are for that have no place in office. I dont care what their policy position on taxes are.

(26,017 posts)he is a decent human being that I can respect, even while not agreeing with him. I felt the same way about McCain. I would never have voted for him, but I did respect him.
Liz Cheney, OTOH, has too much family baggage and too many hard right views for me to say that I respect her as a person. But I do recognize that she is doing a good job as vice chair of the J6 committee. And she is determined to bring down Trump. I just think that she is doing that as much for her own political ambitions as for the nation.

(76,706 posts)And, your assessment is dead on.
A good guy with some screwy politics. He still believes in supply-side economics, for instance. Just ignores all the data to the contrary.
You & I would agree on almost nothing about what he believes, politically.
But, he is not a radical nut job & a decent enough sort.

(26,017 posts)They are decent, likeable people in other areas of life outside of politics. They have some principles and values about character and integrity that I would agree with. They are generally honest people. But, while I like and respect them as people, I totally oppose their politics.
How did you come to have discussions with Kinzinger?

(76,706 posts)He lives about 9 miles from our house.
I've seen him at school fund raising things (mostly athletics & band) a half dozen times at least.
I go to some of these things for the kids I see when I sub, which I started doing when I retired. (He lives about 10 blocks from one of the schools I go to.)
Before that, I was involved in the credit union movement for years & there are 3 quite large CUs in this county. So, he fame to some of those events.
I've probably talked to him 10 or 12 times, most just social conversation though.

(26,017 posts)what he is like beyond the media image.
I had a very brief encounter with Hillary when she was running for her first campaign as Senator for NY. She spoke at a Democratic rally in my community. Although my conversation with her was very brief, it gave me insights and impressions of her that media appearances did not capture. She was attentive, patient, and a good listener, genuinely interested in what each person had to say. After her speech, she shook hands with EVERY person who lined up for it and spent time talking with every single one who had a question or comment. She came across as very warm and personable, sincere, caring, and intelligent. I would have voted for her anyway, but felt even more that she was a good choice after that experience.
In person appearances with voters can do so much good for a candidate, if they are good choices. Or, it can harm them if they are not.

I think it would amplify everything we already dislike.
