My niece was a server at The Rainforest Cafe in Grapevine, Texas. Abbott came in with a party of twenty. Two servers. Not one dime for a tip. His wife told my niece they should be honored to serve him.
My niece, single mom, came home in tears.

When I waited tables I follow 2 groups out to the damn parking lot. And I got my tips too. It's funny how if you confront these people they act all sheepish and give you money.

(2,486 posts)For example, lots of restaurants add a standard gratuity (15-20%) to a bill for a large party (such as 20 people). Are we sure that the complaint isn't simply that the Abbott party didn't add a tip *beyond* the standard gratuity? if that's the case, things are much more murky. Best not to go off just based on a tweet.

(179,756 posts)It is written by a person who was a paralegal at the firm Greg started at. That firm had issues and fell apart in the early 1990s.
I still have not figured out why Greg is running so scared. Greg is pushing policies that fine with the Q-nuts and the more right-wing part of the base. These same policies will hurt Greg in the general election.
There are some good details on the settlement Greg got due to a falling tree. I never got all of the details of this settlement or the accident that left Greg in a wheel chair.

Moore was covered for $1 million or so in his homeowners policy, Riddle recalled. A million dollars didnt stretch that far if you were damaged for life, he said. But he discovered that Moore had paid a tree company that was part of a large national chain to do some work on the oak. Riddle could then assert that the repairs might have been done improperlythat more attention had been paid to caring for the trees canopy than to protecting and stabilizing the roots. Now Riddle had not one but two deep-pocketed defendants. Through what was then known as joint and several liability, a plaintiff could recover damages from multiple parties so long as some responsibility was established.
By 1986, Abbott had completed his rehab. He wasnt walking, but he was moving forward in other ways. Riddle had negotiated an impressive settlement that would support his client for the rest of his life. The estimated total of $3 million (about $8 million today) began with an initial lump-sum payment of $300,000 (about $770,000 in todays dollars), followed by another lump sum of $100,000 in 1989. Abbott would continue to get lump-sum payments every three years, with the last payment of $740,020 scheduled for November 1, 2022a nice supplement to his $153,750 annual governors salary. Additionally, in 1986 Abbott started receiving $5,000 a month (almost $13,000 today) with a built-in annual increase of 4 percent for the remainder of his lifetime. It was all tax-free.
I have never been impressed with Greg's intelligence and I am hopeful that Greg will continue to push homophobic policies that will help Beto

(96,937 posts)Knew who they were because they came in from time to time and always left a calling card on top of their tip. One day they were seated in my section, and I said I wouldn't serve them. I was told to "Do it or clock out". I clocked out.
I did not have the burdens a single parent would have, so it was easier for me to take a stand.
Even still, I would not have waited on Abbott either. It's not the least bit surprising that he stiffed the servers and as odious as the comment made by his wife is, that it was said is also not surprising either.

But I just couldn't wait on them. I thought even allowing them in the restaurant was wrong.
They harassed the staff and other customers, but the management didn't seem to care because they came in a large group, which meant a hefty bill.
Thank you, though.
Pisses me off when people don't tip.

(60,170 posts)If the staff waiting on Abbott and his party came away with nothing at all, this deserves to be on page one of every paper in Texas this morning. We can be sure it will be mentioned in Dallas, Houston, Austin and El Paso, but those are blue islands in a red sea. This needs to be made known statewide.

(33,424 posts)I can't find the story anywhere. Google lists DU as the number one source and Reddit as number two. Why is that? I doubt it happened. A governor, no matter who they are, is not going to handle the bill for that many people. They all have aides to do that.

(53,183 posts)The company I work for owns either 10 or 11 restaurants depending on whether you want to count our "pedal powered pub" (yes, bicycle themed) with a full menu as a bar or a restaurant. Each of these places has a line at the bottom of the menu: groups of six or more have a 15 percent gratuity automatically added to their check. A lot of people will tip above that because 15 percent is the tip of the past.
Most of the places I go do it too.
This doesn't excuse Abbott's Karen-like wife's nasty comment, but if this restaurant doesn't do automatic gratuity for large groups I'd recommend the niece move to a restaurant that does.

(16,267 posts)"A Suggested Gratuity of 15% - 20% is customary. The amount of gratuity is always discretionary."
So they apparently don't have a policy of adding a manditory tip to the bill with large parties. They f'ing should change this policy.
