(33,336 posts)Don Young won the special election after Nick Begich died in a plane crash. Young stayed in office for nearly 50 years until his death.

(5,330 posts)We have to hold this seat because it gives Dems another vote if the 2024 Presidential election gets thrown to the House. The breakdown with the Alaska pickup is 26 R 21 D and 3 tied. It goes without saying that this is deeply undemocratic as the population of the D states vastly outnumbers the population of the blue states.

(3,584 posts)This offsets losing Crist so he can run for governor or Florida. I believe his resignation is effective today?

(17,567 posts)Palin again will be her opponent.
Since Begich won't be on the ballot, those Begich/Peltola voters should go to her. Chris Hayes reported on his show that Palin's former in-laws threw a big campaign bash for Begich. It seems there might be enough Dems plus Palin-hating Rs for Peltola to win again in Nov.
